Red Line trains come to a halt; guy throwing stuff on tracks at fault

Police stopped the Red Line in both directions shortly before 9:45 p.m. because of a guy dumping things on the tracks at Broadway, including what appeared to be one of those heavy bomb-resistant trash barrels.

Police arrested the guy on a charge of malicious destruction of property.

Also, Rae Marie Luna reports a friend said:

The upward escalator suddenly went backwards super fast & many ppl fell. What's up w/ Broadway?

When an escalator suddenly goes backwards like that, it means that one of the parts failed. Could be that it was old, or worm out, or could be that too many people were on the escalator, more than the load it was designed for. If there was a panic situation, with lots of people suddenly getting on the escalator trying to escape the station, that could cause a load in excess of the design load, and hence the failure.

As I was walking down Cambridge Street this afternoon, I heard the most blood curdling screech coming from the Red Line. It was so loud and lasted so long that I wondered if it might be some sort of whistle-siren-alarm or the noise of some horrible failure coming from a motor vehicle rounding Charles Circle. As I got to the station, another train coming out of the tunnel from Park Street made the same noise before stopping at the platform.

Of course, all trains screech from time-to-time and especially in certain places, but the noise today was extraordinary. I thought perhaps the afternoon heat had something to do with it, but it was still screeching very loudly on my way home around midnight after the temperature had cooled down.

I hope this noise isn't another harbinger of doom for the Red Line.

I think it is related to weather conditions. That happens in a few places from time to time.

How can the problem be too many people? Escalators by necessity are designed for two people on every step, plus a big safety margin.
