Slain teen ended life as a hero

The Herald reports that when the gunfire started on Washington Street in Dorchester Wednesday, Raekwon Brown rushed out of a pizza place and pushed a woman down - saving her life but ending his.

The Globe talks to his relatives and teachers, who described a happy kid who "didn't know anything about the streets," and who never missed a day of school and worked hard to get As.

What's going on in this world? The lack of respect for human life, not just in this tragedy but in violence everywhere, is appalling. We the people need to look at ourselves and decide if we are going to accept things the way they are or try to improve.

Bless this young man. How will Herald readers react? They only see black kids in Dorchester as thugs and punks. Blows up their worldview. Prayers to his family and the community. We cannot keep losing bright lights like this young man.

? Herald readers? That is your concern? Keep up the fight, I guess.

Wow.

Second Herald comment:

Do you mean parent? There's no mention of his father, as is all too typical in stories such as this."

Funny how you dont mention the comment prior or the response to said comment. But then again ALL of your comments are typicality bias.

You see, he associates Herald with anything conservative. He is prejudice against conservatives. He is implying that a conservative would claim the victim is a thug since he is black. While he himself may not be a racist we know is certainly is judgmental and prejudice. RIP to theyoung man who was taken in an act of terror.

Sincerely,
A proud conservative

Let's take a quick look at the comments by Herald readers to the original articles on this shooting before it was revealed this young man was a hero:

Let's see if BLM really care. Let them try to get the bad guys then give the info to the BPD.

I worry about our future with all of these budding, future hip hop sensations having their lives cut woefully short. How willI I dance in the shower before leaving for work to support them? Oh, the humanity.

Blame the gun, blame the police, blame the white guy. But don't dare blame it on the failure of the black community for a breakdown of family.

yet while shitting on the Herald he would never dream of repeating such vile opinion.

Hopefully those people who were jumping to nasty conclusions in the original article are reflecting on themselves today.

I was one of those people in the conversation, I was not jumping to any conclusions just engaging in discussion hoping to glean more about the situation.

I usually enjoy your commentary (and honestly, pretty much all the non-anon commentary on this site). However, I think one thing you said about this story yesterday was beyond the pale. Speculating that the victim was armed and shooting back, maybe even hitting the other victims, was a particularly shitty thing to say and looks even worse today.

I realize that there were also several anons finding ways to imply that the victim deserved to be shot. So it wasn't just you.

I've said plenty of things in the comments here that I later regret, and I imagine you're feeling that regret today.

Initial reports were that he was in a typical street fight with someone, hence my response. No, I do not regret it. That was the most logical conclusion to draw based on the initial statements. I am a person more interested in the mechanics of circumstances than the 'human' factor.

I am sad to hear of his death that came about in such an honorable way.

"Evans said it did not appear that a car was used in the shooting, which happened a half-block from the school and that investigators were looking into whether it was a “basic street fight” that turned more serious."

Basis for my initial points.

How does suggesting he might have been armed and firing at people help to glean information, you had no facts to base that on. Just wild, racist speculation. It would be as if I were to say you were probably a serial child molester to explain why you would post something so useless and hateful. I personally cant figure out any other reason you did so. Let the gleaning begin.

I suggested that no where, I just did not rule it out. Read my post again.

No race involved in any part of my comment. People engaged in violence are more likely to be the victims of homicide, that has no racial boundaries and per initial reports there was a fight.

Sadly though, I think the vast majority will move on without giving what they actually said a second thought. There are bound to be exceptions.

Raekwon Brown was sitting inside a pizza place eating a hamburger when the shooting broke out, and he ran out to push her to safety. But that would mean he got killed by accident, because the shooters were really aiming at someone else (the shooting started before he came outside). The police say Brown was involved in an argument with someone, went back inside the school, and when he came back out, they shot him. These two stories seem unconnected rather than two versions of the same thing.
