Suffolk Construction seeks to expand Roxbury headquarters

Suffolk Construction proposed expansion

Architect's rendering.

Suffolk Construction has filed plans with the BRA to build a $22-million, 38,000-square-foot expansion to its 65 Allerton St. headquarters, starting with tearing down four old warehouse buildings.

The vacant and dilapidated warehouse buildings at 79-91 Allerton Street will be replaced by a dramatic new building, designed by noted design firm Elkus Manfredi Architects, which will set a new standard for the design quality for the area. Visible from nearby Massachusetts Avenue, the building will be a symbol of the continuing rebirth of the area.

The company employs roughly 332 people at its current headquarters and expects to add another 33 or so employees - and another 100 employees from an affiliated company moving from Braintree.

If Suffolk Construction plays this right, they might be able to fix the buildings, get free rent, and a helipad. Hello, Marty?

If someone has some vision (and money), that area has so much potential for much needed housing. Underused, close to downtown and transit. Marty.....get your Boston 2030 people on it.

Why is the BRA involved in something like this? Shouldn't this just be standard city permitting?
