Two people rescued by helicopter after their sailboat runs aground on rocks in Boston Harbor

The Coast Guard reports two men on a sailboat spent nearly four hours aground on rocks off Lovells Island before the crew of a helicopter from a Coast Guard base on Cape Cod plucked them off.

The Coast Guard says the Silent Passage ran aground around 1 p.m. The men contacted a local marine salvage company, but the tide was too low for them to be towed off the rocks by either that company or by a Coast Guard cutter that arrived on scene.

Initially, the plan was to wait for the tide to refloat the sailing vessel, but the wind speed increased to between 20-30 knots and the situation was becoming unsafe.

The helicopter was then dispatched from the Cape around 4:40 p.m.

Serious conditions on the harbor. I was on the 6:05 Hull ferry and the captain had to fight headwinds for approx. 5 minutes to maneuver to dock. No joke.
