Driver dies in VFW Parkway rollover

Updated.

A rollover around 1:15 p.m. on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury near the Dedham line killed the driver and injured two of his four passengers. Some two dozen bystanders worked frantically to get the man's SUV off him after he was ejected from the vehicle and it landed on him, State Police report.

The crash, southbound, outside Prime Honda near the Dedham line, happened when the driver, a 54-year-old Roxbury man, lost control of the Ford Escape, possibly when he suffered "a medical event," the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

State Police report:

The operator of the vehicle was partially ejected and became pinned beneath the vehicle when it rolled over, coming to rest on the passenger side. Approximately 25 bystanders at the scene came to the aid of the trapped driver, attempting to lift the vehicle off of the driver. Some of the bystanders used jacks to assist in lifting the vehicle. The driver was successfully extricated and transported to Faulkner Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

State Police are continuing to investigated the rollover, which shut the parkway in both directions for roughly three hours.
