My Side of the Mountain
The book is My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George (a wonderful author) and has a couple of sequels. I have very happy memories of reading it to my son - we both loved it.

Hawk
I wonder if this is the same bird that was eating a rat down by Haymarket the other day?
They're not that uncommon
Marsh hawks are not that uncommon around Boston. They're low-fliers and prey on squirrels, pigeons, rats, etc. They're kinda awesome. The Fens is a great place to look for them.
