Why we can't have nice things, Allston flowers edition

Pulled flowers in Allston

Peter Krowiak reports some jerk last night pulled out many of the flowers that had been planted in front of 26 Allston St. He says he replanted the plants that still had roots, gave some away to passerby, took the rest home.

That stinks, but it's part of urban life. It happens in the city. Same goes for the people stealing the vegetables in the community garden.

No. It's not "part of urban life" - somebody ripping up a flower bed is deliberately acting like an asshole.

In any sufficiently-large group of people, there will be assholes. That doesn't make it a good thing, but pretending that it isn't true is going to make you more aggravated than you otherwise would be.

Some countries, like Japan for example, destruction of personal property is much lower than it is here. It isn't just x number of people means y number of assholes. A lot more goes into it than that.

The Japanese may have more respect for the property of other Japanese, but they also have a history of being as complete assholes as you can be WRT the property and persons of non-Japanese. A lot of older people in China still believe that the population of Japan includes a huge number of assholes. The Chinese experienced severe, extreme levels of asshole behavior at the hands of the Japanese, and the ones who were alive then have not forgotten it.

And I'm not surprised by all of this as he's seriously got a heart of gold. He's also the kind of guy who'll buy 2-3 boxes of pizza and hand slices out to homeless people before he catches his train home after hitting the bar with friends.

I did a bit of a double take when I read his name since he's an acquaintance of mine, but this is characteristically him.
