You know how they say this is New England and if you don't like the weather wait a minute?

Adam posts someone's beautiful photo of a quiet street in Roxbury and you have to bitch about his caption... what a sad little man you are.

The weather on the West Coast and Hawaii is pretty uniform from day-to-day. In California, you can go weeks without checking a weather report before getting dressed in the morning, only realizing you've been doing so on Day 21 when the weather's changed and now you are improperly dressed. In Hawaii, the temperature's pretty much the same every day all year, but it rains often enough that you have to yes/no an umbrella before leaving for the day.

New England weather isn't uniquely volatile, but it has significantly more weather volatility than, say, Los Angeles does. Fivethirtyeight ran the numbers a bit ago and the most noticable difference is east/west of the Rockies, with the west coast having rather stable weather and the east not. Although the "winner" by their measure was in the midwest/great plains area, not here.

Still, one thing New England has going for it is that our average winter highs are close enough to 32F that we can easily switch between being below freezing and above freezing, with the change in weather that implies.

Mark Twain (who allegedly coined the phrase) was from Missouri, anyway. So we were certainly showing him more snow than he was used to, even though Missouri weather is plenty volatile in other ways.
