A bit of refuge from the ice

Ducks, geese and coots in water at otherwise frozen Jamaica Pond

Geese, ducks and coots congregated in what appeared to be the last remaining bit of open water on Jamaica Pond, at the north end, this morning. Some birds remained aloof: Two swans seemed to prefer their space out on the ice rather than sharing it with their cousins, as did a flock of seagulls.

Somebody told me, just this morning as I was taking a stroll, that it's not good for old coots to be out in conditions like these.
