And Boston is a big city, not 'mid-sized'. Metro Boston is huge, one of the largest in the country. Boston, like other cities and towns, doesn't exist in a vacuum. Especially true here in MA, where municipal geographical boundaries are quite small compared to other areas of the U.S.
Given that the mayor has no control over anything outside the municipal borders of Boston proper, I see no reason for him to be referencing metro-Boston for safety or anything else. Boston proper is a mid-sized city.
And even metro-Boston is much smaller than cities like New York.
Personally, I hate superlatives. By claiming to be "the safest" Walsh opens himself up to criticism.
Now, "safer than average" is a valid claim, and Walsh's new claim of "one of the safest of comparable cities" is good, but safest is a tough claim to back up.
Related, how is it that New York City has a lower murder rate than Boston? That one stat from the article amazed me. Good job NYC, which is tough for me to say.
The neighborhoods in which little girls at birthday parties get shot don't sound safe.
Myself, and the people who can afford $300K for just a parking space, should be demanding social justice for the people who live in the unsafe neighborhoods.
Huge warrants sweeps?
Door-to-door gun buyback, no questions asked, with amnesty for possession (but not amnesty for any use of the gun)?
Charging an entire gang, when they shoot an innocent person, or intimidate a witness?
Warrant sweeps:
Nice but judges let them out again
Buy backs:
DOJ has plenty of research 'buy-backs' don't work. Why the Hell would criminals willingingly surrender the tools of their trade for less than their street value other than to destroy evidence?
Charging gangs:
See judges and a lack of evidence leads to countersuits
Jobs & education:
This does work to some degree. But the lowlife criminal subset isn't interested in jobs or education. Hence why they are criminals.
Stopping crime is mostly establishing a social environment via families and communities where criminality is unacceptable. The more normalized criminal activity is vs. lawfulness or more more apathetic/hopeless a population is to crime, the more crime exists.
I'm not sure if the way the city collects crime statistics gives a reader an accurate picture of crime in Boston. For example all crimes committed on state property in the city of Boston are complied by the state police not the Boston Police. All crimes committed on the MBTA in the city of Boston are compiled by the Transit Police not the Boston Police. All crimes committed on colleges and universities in the city of Boston are compiled by the 50 or so different campus police agencies and not the Boston Police. If all the crimes that occurred on the jurisdictions above in the city of Boston were added to the crime statistics compiled by the Boston Police you would have a more accurate picture of crime in the city of Boston.
Your point is irrelevant because it all goes to the FBI anyway. you can go to the DOJ's website and look up crime rates for Boston on the Uniform Crime Report by year. It's not difficult.
Most crime does not involve random strangers targeted. Most crime takes place between individuals who are already criminally involved. If you are not involved in the drug or illegal weapons trade, chances are you have nothing to worry about. Trouble won't find you here unless you go looking for it. Most violent crimes take place in a very, very small geographic area of Boston amongst people who are putting themselves at risk in an illegal market. You are also always going to have some crime in cities because population density creates opportunity. But if you can walk to work without mugged, you live in a safe city. Count your blessings. We live in a great city and are very very lucky.

No, it's not the safest city
but it's far from the worse.

Boston is mid-size, metro-Boston is large
Given that the mayor has no control over anything outside the municipal borders of Boston proper, I see no reason for him to be referencing metro-Boston for safety or anything else. Boston proper is a mid-sized city.
And even metro-Boston is much smaller than cities like New York.
bad example
Every city in the country is much smaller than cities like New York.
Massachusetts
The entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts has fewer residents then the city of New York.
Point well taken

NYC is very varied
There are parts of NYC that are more like Boston's inner suburbs.
It's pretty safe, most neighborhoods

Jobs programs? Better education at all schools?
charge an entire gang
for something they may/may not have done, been near, or been involved with
that won't go horribly wrong at all, nope

Safe?
That hard to stomach right now with 4 deaths just last weekend.
ok
boston is indeed very safe compared to other places even in our own country. of course it has murders and crime, it has people.

you can also review UCR data on crime.

If you...
.....check out neighborhodscout.com, Boston is safer than 17% of U.S. cities in total. I dont feel unsafe in Boston but every city has its shit areas.
Rational thinking here.

oh
so basically most victims of crimes were 'asking for it'
i wont bother to even elaborate further
