Car break-in suspect eludes police in swamp along Charles River in West Roxbury

A Boston Police officer interrupted two guys breaking into a car on Charles Park Road around 12:30 p.m. today. One was quickly captured, the other ran down to Rivermoor Street and, on seeing a cop still chasing him, ran into the marshy woodlands along the Charles across from the Prime car-repair facility.
Police brought in a tracking dog and asked the Fire Department to bring in a thermal-imaging camera to try to track him down, but by 1:20 p.m., police called off the search for him, after a search that extended from Rivermoor to the area behind the skating rink.

They couldn't catch him?
There's not that much land before you get to the deep water portion of the river there so I'm surprised he got away. If he made it out past the boat ramp, that's different as there is a lot of woods and swamp out that way.
There's nothing deep about the Charles upstream of Watertown
At Cow Island Pond, the water is rarely deeper than your calves, and it's like that for at least as far as the next dam in either direction.

Also, if this dude was wading across a wide open pond area, seems like the cops would have seen him clear as day, no?

All these keyboard heroes should really take the next police test so that when they join, the BPD will never lose a foot chase again!
Not my point
It's just not a large area so I'm honestly interested in how someone could hide from the cops there. Again, out beyond Millennium of course they get away but in an area bordered by a major road, a swamp/pond and the parking lot where the cops were I guess, it was curious to me.
At no point did I say the cops did anything wrong, etc... so calm down.
Cold water is cold water
There is also the issue of time, as in "how much time before hypothermia sets in". Police may have broken off the chase rather quickly, given safety considerations, but perps and cops won't differ in their response to that cold.
Fog may also have been a factor.

I'd say there is some waist-deep water in that area. Plus it's f*cking COLD!
