Pitchers get hit by batted balls all the time. This one just got hit in a particularly bad place.

Seem particularly susceptible to heart problems when struck sharply in the chest. Seems to be anatomical. Happens not frequently, but regularly in youth baseball. Pitchers and 3rd basemen are particularly vulnerable.

Based on my observations (catch with son, watching youth leagues), some young kids try to catch every ball with the back of the glove face down, so the ones that come in at chest level they can't fully stop and inevitably hits them in the chest/collarbone.

Even has a name.

I would consider getting hit at the exact moment my heart was susceptible to be a freak accident, cause a lot of things have to align in order for that outcome to occur.

Hopefully this poor boy ends up ok.

Is that something really bad happened - other than a painful bruise.

This also happened in hockey enough that the chest pads were changed.

Not just boys, but girls too. Boys are just more likely to be playing hockey or baseball.

From 1996 to spring 2007, the USA National Commotio Cordis Registry had 188 cases recorded, with about half occurring during organized sports.

However, with 188 cases in 11 years ... or about 17 per year ... versus how many balls thrown and fielded? I think it qualifies as a freak situation.

You are more likely to be killed by lightning while playing. For comparison: There are about 20 lightning deaths per year for people playing soccer, golfing, baseball, etc. http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/sports.shtml

Of course it is still a good idea to do whatever is possible to avoid either situation.

Any word on how the kid is doing? Sounds like he got prompt care, but this is every family's nightmare!
