Kaboom: Manholes explode in Government Center area

Shortly before 11 a.m., in the area of Cambridge and New Sudbury streets. WCVB reports several manhole explosions.

Ted Folkman reports:

Just saw a manhole cover explode right outside the JFK building, and loud boom. Smoke billowing out!

Shouldn't safety tethers be standard? Aside from welding them shut, what other solutions are being explored? Between this and the O'Neill tunnel incident last year, it should be a no-brainer.

How about "sewer cap"? "Manhole" is fairly meaningless if you take it literally -- a hole in what?

Because many of them have nothing to do with sewers - they cover utility conduits, water mains, the underground lairs of pizza-eating fighting turtles, etc.
