Kids, balls, tubes and duct tape come together in former Roslindale cafe

Roslindale pop-up ball run

Roslindale Wants to Play and Roslindale Village Main Street have turned the long abandoned Select Cafe on Belgrade Avenue into a pop-up Build Zone where kids (and, shh, adults) can create "ball runs" tomorrow and next Saturday.

Cora Carey, STEAM and maker project manager at the Children's Museum worked with other Roslindale residents over the past few days to build the centerpieces of the play area: Hand-cranked "elevators" kids can use to transport plastic balls to the tops of towers for journeys down to the ground.

The Build Zone is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow and March 25 at 2 Belgrade Ave., across from the Roslindale Village train-station parking lot. Free admission, but parent or guardian required.

This was such a fantastic idea. My son started building at 10am and was extremely reluctant to leave at 1pm. The kids were collaborating beautifully with very little parent involvement. If only this could be a permanent fixture!!!!

A little off topic, but the ceiling and the half-painted wall in the background make me curious. Last I heard a vet was going in there -- is that no longer the plan? Seems a shame, if so, having fewer empty storefronts would be nice :(

Landlord wanted too much in rent, perhaps.

So same old story as the rest of the empty buildings waiting to rot away, huh. Too bad.
