Landmark Dorchester restaurant to shut down

Phillips Old Colony House and the Freeport Tavern, 780 Morrissey Blvd., announced yesterday it's closing forever on Jan. 15.

The Dorchester Reporter reports neighboring ventures owned by the same family - the Phillips Candy House and Boston Bowl - will stay open.

Why America's Restaurant Bubble is About to Burst

I wonder how common a refrain this is going to become, given the explosion of high-quality fast-casual places that have opened in recent years. I'll light the MC Slim JB beacon, maybe he has a better sense of how it's playing out locally.

"Bu for the average city diner, the bubble bursting will have very real consequences. For one, most sit-down dining will, in many ways, revert back to what it was in the '80s/'90s: reserved for special occasions. And this is for the simple reason that restaurants need to universally raise their prices to keep affording to pay their workers and buy food and serve you a choice of sparkling or still water with your house-baked bread and house-cultured butter (this will also serve as a gut check for the mass of people who claim to be for changes to restaurants that result in paying fair wages, but as soon as they see higher prices themselves as a result of said wage increases, immediately forget their lofty talk and take to Yelp to complain). "

"But then again, more and more restaurants will also opt to go the other way, and become hip iterations of fast-casual restaurants, with smaller menus, counter service, and a skeleton crew of front- and back-of-the-house staff."

In Roslindale, Redd's is no longer open on Sundays due to staff shortages and that's before the new Derna's open or the brew pub in the substation. I'll hope for the best but I bet all of those restaurants can't all be supported even with the new housing coming on line in Roslindale.

The idea of an upscale cafeteria makes a lot of sense to me, although it's a shame to see waitstaff lose their jobs as that's a decent way to make a living without having a degree.

I never heard of Redd's until the earlier post but is he really closed on Sundays due to staffing shortages? Eataly just hired 600 people a few miles away. What's Redd paying them? Sunday seems an odd day to close a restaurant, given that most people who work restaurants as a second job are off from their "real job" on Sundays, as are the clientele who might be looking to eat out. If the angry, anti-Trump post is any indication, I'm not surprised that workers are scarce.

Obviously haven't visited that restaurant in a long time, it's like stepping back into a time capsule. There are several new restaurants in Dorchester are doing just fine because they have quality food and great service .
Like anything if you do it right you will succeed .
