Meet the alleged photo putzes who brought the Orange Line to a halt at rush hour yesterday

Johnson and Nakhili

Johnson and Nakhili

Transit Police charge two urban explorers who like taking subway photos from trackside are to blame for yesterday afternoon's massive Orange Line delays.

Police say that around 5:10 p.m., an officer at the Chinatown stop noticed two guys get onto the tracks and start running towards Tufts Medical Center.

The officer immediately communicated with MBTA subway operations to hold all service in the area and proceeded in the direction of the males. The officer was joined by other TPD officers and made the walk through the tunnel.

Approximately 50 feet from the southbound platform of Tufts Medical Center the officers located the two males hiding in a niche. ...

Both subjects were in possession of cameras and stated they wanted to take pictures and videos of the tunnels.

Mogan Johnson, 19, of Quincy, and Peter Nakhili, 20, of Stoughton, were charged with trespassing.

Nakhili, who likes shooting with a Nikon, seems to have traipsed down Green Line tracks as well, and visited the abandoned Harvard Square stop on the Red Line. He summed up his philosophy in one T photo as: Kill the underground before it kills you.

A photo Nakhili posted on his Instagram account a month ago:

Orange Line from the side of the tracks

Innocent, etc.

The knuckleheads didn't shut down the Orange Line. The MBTA did.

I suppose they could have kept the trains running and risked having these two dismembered by a train ...

Sounds like a plan.

(Russia) on Monday, I for one don't blame the MBTA for shutting down the Orange Line in response to a report of two yutzes jumping onto the tracks and running into the tunnel.

They could have won a Darwin Award. Why did the MBTA stop them from Winning?

Because dealing with that mess is far worse for everyone involved.

in response to similar comments on this forum, being struck by a train and killed, as unfortunate as it may be for the victim, is now considered so commonplace it no longer qualifies one for a Darwin award. Further, their act of going into the tunnel was clearly deliberate, which would also disqualify them from consideration for a Darwin if, for example, they fell and died from their injuries even if a train didn't strike them.

In Mumbai on the metro railway system, an average of eight people are killed every day in accidents. Half of them are struck by trains while taking a shortcut crossing the tracks on foot.
Others fall out of moving trains or impact foreign objects while hanging out the doorway of a moving train. If the transit police stopped service for hours every time an accident happened, then that system would literally be stopped all day.

Americans' usual reaction to this is that people there do not value human life. To the contrary, American culture for the past ~50 years is unique in human history in the extent to which we hypervalue human life and try to protect people from themselves. For millions of years it was "accidents happen" and now it's "accidents are totally unacceptable!!" I don't know what drives it. Maybe it's the inevitable outcome of lower fertility rates with families having two kids instead of ten kids. Maybe it's the result of televised news. Or it could be because of how our measures liability and negligence. Either way, it's crazy weird compared to the rest of the world and world history.

Life was so much better when it was cheap. People are so hung up on staying alive these days.

They were off to photograph the old Elevated portal you can see between the stops.

But this is really very dumb. Throw the book at them to send a lesson. Want to get pictures? Talk to the T: they may be amenable (but probably not). But trespass on railroad property is never a good idea.

ok so far your commentary on justice amounts to a cliche, what specifically do you suggest that would be an appropriate punishment that would deter future endeavors on their part and the parts of others

please use this handy 5 step program as a guide: https://nij.gov/five-things/pages/deterrence.aspx

i await your response. please take as much time as needed. if you don't agree with the merits of the website i linked, feel free to disregard it. but i do expect a specific plan of action from you.

I don't agree these guys should spend a lot of time in prison (but they hopefully spent last night in the slammer). But if they get the usual light slap on the upper wrist, copycats will abound. The issue is that they seem to like the publicity. So let it be known that if you do this, you will be caught. Post surveillance photos (the T has these) showing (or insinuating) that even if you get away with it, TPD will know who you are. Put the fear of god in to these miscreants and others with similar ideas.

Look, the photos look great. It's just that they put the photographer and many others in danger.

OK, no prison time, but make them pay restitution of $15 to every person that was delayed.

From the reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/boston/comments/2y51uq/abandoned_red_line_stop_...

I wonder if that's what they were looking for? I've always been curious myself as to what the light in the tunnel was between Harvard and Central!

I thought the same thing. They had one of Fenway which was taken down and then put up again. I didn't look to see if it's been re-taken down.

The orange line was a mess because of these two morons. I'm glad the hundreds of people they delayed now know what they look like and they live in fear of ever going near the T again.

up

what exactly you're glad about regarding their fear? i'm lost here

up

I seriously doubt they're living in fear of going near the T again but nice try tough guy.

Several weeks ago I as I was walking on Huntington from NEU, I observed 2 thrill seekers racing down the Green Line tunnel leading underground toward Symphony Station. A trolley emerged maybe 10-15 seconds after they had disappeared undergound. I have no way of knowing if it was the two pictured above-considering the location I would guess that they were college kids.

but I kind of think you should take down the Instagram photo. Publicity is what these imbeciles want and providing it kind of encourages their behavior.

It's also a stupid picture.

for demonizing small fry like this and generating so much righteous indignation. In light of the real issues of right and wrong facing society, I read your posts and comments and want to pat all of you on your little heads.

Of course, their parents/family won't sue the MBTA if they died right? The MBTA wouldn't have faced public outrage if they hadn't shut down to secure their safety and investigate why they were trespassing - should we ask the people in St. Petersburg? Or should we just ask the thousands who couldn't get home because of them. Way to stick up for the brutally oppressed.

he's not exactly wrong, and getting home late from work isn't exactly 'throw people in jail' territory, otherwise the red sox, bruins, and celtics would all be in jail

i've lived both at kenmore & riverside T stops ama about fun things fuckin up my commutes

up
Voting closed 0

No, making people get home late isn't jailable in itself. For example, you don't go to jail if your car breaks down on the Mass Pike where there's no shoulder.

But trespassing in a subway tunnel? Definitely.

up
Voting closed 0

Demonizing breaking the law because what they did was trespassing and bring subway service to a stop during rush hour yesterday.

Is there any evidence of mole men living in the abandoned tunnels of the MBTA?

up

Taking pictures of transit is a great hobby, but a message to the two who were walking in the tunnel between stations, please don't do things like that! That was stupid. Do things safely and within the law. Thank you.
