MIT convenience store steathily burglarized, possibly by man with Samurai sword strapped to his back

MIT Police report that LaVerde’s Market, in the Student Center, 84 Massachusetts Ave., was burglarized last night:

The suspect entered the back office of the store, stole money from the safe, and departed without the knowledge of staff or customers. Store employees contacted MIT Police after they began counting the money for the day at approximately 10:20 PM and realized cash was missing from the safe.

The back office and the safe were not locked at the time of the theft. The suspect had what appeared to be a samurai type sword on his back.

The suspect is described as black, 5'10" and slender. He wore a gray jacket with a blue hoodie underneath and dark pants and carried a large nylon duffel bag with a shoulder strap. And, of course, had what appeared to be a Samurai sword on his back.

Ed. note: Some might remember the time the Burlington Mall was evacuated because of a man packing what appeared to be a gun or sword that turned out to be an umbrella with a weapon-like handle.

I know a martial arts teacher who is always getting useless martial arts themed gifts, and who was given one of those umbrellas. After thanking the giver, she told me privately, "Ain't no WAY I'm walking down the street carrying that."

Is LaVerde’s still a Shaws Star Market? or part of some larger group?

Well, besides myself, my buddy Sam is the only other black samurai in the region. So either Sam or I did it.

I'm surprised but not that surprised this indie convenience store doesn't have rigorous cash handling procedures. They should have a drop safe, to be able to insert cash without having to unlock and relock the safe.

A safe that's not locked isn't much good for anything. They may as well have used a desk drawer that is labeled "open me, valuables inside"!

It's a moot point. What safe is going to keep out a trained samurai? He (or she) could cut through it like a ripe melon.
