Northeastern claims fewer Mission Hill complaints about its students

Officials credit stepped up patrols by Northeastern cops in the neighborhood on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, plus counseling for off-campus students on how not to be jerks, according to the Huntington News, which reports officials made the assertions at a "town hall meeting" on community relations to which community residents were not invited.

The students are moving into neighborhoods further east. Now they're in Washington Park/Fort Hill and over by Dudley. Our neighborhood associations have been talking to Northeastern about it and they say they can't patrol the whole city, their students could potentially live anywhere within commuting distance, blah blah blah.

Without a university owned or leased property the campus PD legally can't patrol because their officers wouldn't have jurisdiction. Campus Police as state level sworn special police officers (certified police academy graduates) only have jurisdiction within 1 mile of campus owned or leased property.

Unless the officers were also sworn as Boston SPOs, which have their own wacky restrictions for essentially being poorly armed (more regulated and restricted by ordinance than private security) and laughably trained security guards, there's no legal authorization for campus PD to be everywhere.

Another possible reason for the decline in complaints is the uptick of international students - now about 20% of the NU student body. International students live off campus, primarily, and don't tend to fit the same profile of rowdy college students - most are from China or India and are here solely to get a US diploma, not to have the traditional American college experience. Whether or not they live in Mission Hill or elsewhere, though, I don't know.

Now can you start patrolling South Boston and crack down on some of these Husky buffoons living here?

Of course there are less complaints more and more long time residents are leaving. Most of the area is all college now. I moved last month after 52 years the last week was so noisy!
