More Roxbury city-council candidates emerge

As incumbent District 7 City Councilor Tito Jackson was announcing his mayoral bid yesterday, two new candidates emerged for his council seat.

Both Hassan Williams and Joao DePina filed papers with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance to mark the creation of campaign committees. The registration does not necessarily mean they will run in the September preliminary; the city elections department does not release nominating petitions unitl May 2.

They join Rufus Faulk, Kim Janey and Charles Clemons Muhammad in running for the two-year seat in this fall's elections. The Bay State Banner reports several other people are considering bids as well.

Williams, an attorney, ran unsuccessfully against state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz in 2010 and organized a campaign for mayor in 2013.

DePina, who owns a local floral shop, is active on the Ward 12 Democratic Committee.

So great to hear about contested races - but only the districts where the incumbent is leaving are attracting candidates. That shouldn't be the norm!

I'd love to see each district councilor have a challenger, as well as several candidates decide to run for at-large.

C'mon!

Are any of these guys going to partner with Zak's state rep to get the law repealed that says that ESL students with hearing issues cannot get a copy of the stenographic report of the Boston City Council?

I've seen you leave this comment on a few posts now, curious to know more of what you're talking about.

It's right here. I pointed this out to the Zak a few years back, but apparently he doesn't want to do anything about it. Better to complain than to take action, I guess.
