Sometimes, it seems like we live in a bubble here, but we really don't

Nicole Dungca, a reporter at the Globe, posts a charming little Facebook friend request she wouldn't have gotten if her first name were Robert or Tom.

I don't know, I'm a woman and I never feel exempt from this happening to me, no matter where I am on the internet.

I hope she reported this to FB, the "Im not going away stay tune"(sic) is harassment and she says the comments got worse.

So no one has ever threatened someone named Robert or Tom on the internet?

Trust me on that.

But, no, in general, male reporters on the Internet are not subject to the unceasing barrage of crap from bottom dwellers like female reporters are. I can go weeks on Facebook or Twitter without getting the sort of stuff Dungca may get on a daily basis.

Then what was the purpose of that editorial comment? The only reason I'm harping on this is that usually you're better than that. This story stands on it's own without bringing this kind of crap into it.

Couple of reasons.

1) She is getting crap not just because she's a reporter, but because she's a woman.

2) Sometimes you have to be really, really obvious when stating stuff online.

What does she generally report on? What did she report on immediately prior to this incident?

But really, if you Googled her name, you'd discover she's been writing about transportation. Maybe somebody at MassDOT really hates her, but Occam's Law still says, nah, it's just your basic male jerk.

You're really trying to downplay this as if it's not an issue that deserves this level of criticism? Sounds like you and the accused are cut from the same cloth.

Present as female and then present as male in internet spaces.

Do your own research, don't imagine your own reality.

Then the vitriol will come like clockwork. Sometimes anti-Semitism and threats of physical violence, too.

Bubble indeed.

Your problem is belief versus FACTS. You are really ignorant about history, democracy, culture, and other issues in ways that have nothing to do with ideology.

Then you yammer on as if your ability express yourself makes up for that.

It doesn't. Not with us.

Try RESEARCHING what you say and posting SUPPORT for your "beliefs" from factual and historical sources. The vitriol level will go down.

First the name-calling, in this case, a not-even-that-dressed-up insult implying mental deficiency. Sometimes they adorned with more of an intellectual figleaf, but no matter. The point is that it's almost always just name-calling, without any attempt at debate or argument or reasoning. Bubble-dwellers often believe they have the monopoly on truth and any statement to the contrary is beneath their dignity to discuss, hence insults.

Wait long enough, and if the topic of religion or immigration or race comes up, then the insults will turn progressively less and less civil. You can just see it in there, waiting to spring out:

You are really ignorant about history, democracy, culture, and other issues

This one could very easily turn into a discussion of a very particular kind of history, to make the point about something something punch a Nazi. It's Godwin's law seen in its purest form. Take a look at my past comments and flame wars. It's all there. I'm not making it up.

I dunno, man, if you keep presenting as a lively talker without the faintest grasp of historical, political, or social context, people are probably going to reach their own conclusions,

How do you know I, a leftish Jewish guy originally from New York, don't routinely get anti-Semitic comments that you just don't see because I don't post them?

We've had a variation of this discussion before. I don't think either one of us learned anything new.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Explaining how assimilation has not spared people like you in the past isn't antisemitism or threats. It is history.

No wonder you hate history so much.

I just saw a post from a male Globe reporter who went "I forgot I am a journalist sometimes and I have to talk to people who read my stories" (in regard to someone who stopped him on the street)

I've been on the internet for 25+ years. And it never fails.. someone always feels more empowered behind a keyboard and screen. People feel they have carte blanche to say whatever they want to someone, even if its nasty and mean spirited. It's disgusting how low people will go now. Social media has just made it even worse.

The internet.. bring out the inner child in all of us. ugh.

I agree. Technology is killing civility

In the past newspapers had editors to keep the crazy comments out of print. Now everyone is anonymous and self- posting so we all hide behind that anonymity and become mean. I am guilty of it as well. Happy Thoughts and Thanksgiving to all

Because male reporters have never been threatened for their work. And because the Globe is doing great these days. #imwithnicole

...really really disingenuous or really really dumb?

First and foremost, things like this suck. No one should be sent messages like that.

The more I think about it, there are no other points. No one should be sent messages like that.
