Two East Boston residents taken to the hospital with possible carbon-monoxide poisoning

A smouldering underground power cable may be the source of the carbon monoxide that sent two residents of an East Boston apartment building to the hospital last night, the Boston Fire Department reports.

Firefighters responded around 10:50 p.m. to investigate a report of a gas leak at 2-4 Elbow St.

Monitoring devices showed elevated readings of carbon monoxide and firefighters evacuated the building. Two other residents were checked at the scene but were OK, the department says, adding elevated CO readings were also detected at East Boston Municipal Court.

An Eversource crew arrived at the scene to do something about the cable, the department says.

This is why you need a CO detector, even if you don't have gas or oil heaters or appliances.

They have become quite inexpensive. Some communities sell them at cost - check with your town or city hall or web page.

I hope these folks get well soon.

Update: Oops - CO, not CO2. Fixed!

To be clear, that's a CO (not CO2) detector.

Wasn't there a law that people (especially landlords) had to install them?
