Boston Restaurant Talk reports the venerable Our House East on Gainsborough Street in the Fenway has new owners, who plan to replace it with two restaurants, one a "chic, bordello-evoking taco bar."
to add to the authenticity? And add some Grit? (I think they have some in Chelsea.) And I hope that they can find some cool art on Amazon of skeletons with big sombreros and bullet belts to hang on the walls . .
I worked next door to that place for 17 years. I'd go in there for lunch at 11 a.m. and be the only customer, and the service was still incredibly slow. Still, great onion soup and hamburgers and good times with co-workers, I'll miss it.
If you are old like me, you grew up seeing Polynesian/Chinese restaurants all over the place, especially in more suburban locales. They had tiki statues, fake grass roofs, etc. and served exotic drinks like suffering bastards and scorpion bowls.
Now those places are become Tequila bars at an alarming rate, and not any less tacky or infused with safely neutered exotica.
Our family/friend group often goes there on or around Jewish Christmas.
We have a tradition of making sure at least one person orders a suffering bastard, and placing bets as to whether the particular server will say "suffering bastard" or "SB" when repeating it back and/or bringing it to the table.
Also, along those lines, TGI Friday's staff are instructed that the bar does in fact make red-headed sluts, but the staff must refer to them simply as "red heads" at all times.
Though Empire Garden is probably better suited for dim sum during the daylight hours, they have a full menu of such drinks in their offerings. I think I got a Zombie last time I was in. They have all of the fun Tiki cups/mugs, too. As a side note, I couldn't believe how huge that space is.
OHE smelt of fuel oil (big spill in the basement at some point) and had a bar made of plywood and particle board. But the guy who did the cooking, "Apple" was awesome. It was a hang for some of the BSO musicians and staff post concert. Such a diverse crowd, we called it the "Star Wars" bar. Sad to learn of its impending demise but surprised it hadn't happened earlier.

Until the place gets raided by SWAT:

Also why buy the art from Amazon when Boston and the metro area has plenty of Central and South American artists with local studios?
I think...
...the original comment was sarcasm. At least I sure hope so.
Five days ago
I walked by, and since I thought I had heard something about OHE closing, I poked my head in, and asked the doorguy about said rumors.
"Oh no, we're not going anywhere." Too bad the poor chap was ill-informed.
And then you found $5?
.
I found an Aruban dime
At my laundromat today. That count?
I'll miss it

Perfect spot...
...for those of us who have always wanted to eat tacos in a Mexican whorehouse. I guess I can cross that off my bucket list soon.
They just threw random adjectives at the page
The taco bar is the less-weird description: the other restaurant is supposed to be an "urban, rustic" tavern.
Do they even know what "rustic" means?
I do!
That was the kid in the Vacation movies with Chevy Chase!
right?
i feel like "urban rustic" is.. "blighted"
Tequila/Taco/Mexicali Bar is the new Tiki Bar

If you feel misogyny is the way to respond to people with whom you disagree, might be time to find a forum that better suits you.
Well the description is offensive and just kinda dumb.

Weirdly, the word is actually italian, which i didn't know. But why "chic, bordello-evoking taco bar" seems like a good idea, I don't know either.
Quel' Bordel'
Comme on dit en francais.
Idiomatic: What a Mess.
