Professional women's soccer dies in Boston

Breakers

The Boston Breakers announce they're done forever, after talks with a prospective buyer fell through.

One of the current owners, Matthew Stoller, said in a statement that several other possible buyers were interested, but none would commit to acquiring the team in time for the next season.

Boston had a professional women's soccer team?

More fun than The Revs (owing to the Nerd Reveres in the end zone yelling and shouting but not paying attention to the actual game), great price, and a place you could get to easy enough. The players were great and very approachable for my daughter to talk with and pick up pointers.

Too bad I had no idea that they were still playing last year. Their marketing was nearly non-existent.

This is the second time a Boston franchise in this league has folded or suspended operations. At least our woman's national team can probably beat Trinidad or Bosnia.

I think you are confusing leagues. The Breakers played in the NWSL and have been there since the beginning of this league and played in 3 different leagues since 2009 without a break.

The Breakers played in the WUSA from 2001 to 2003 and they only stopped playing when the league folded.

Stop trying to make professional women's soccer happen.

It's not going to happen.

Portland Oregon's team pulls in more than 15,000 fans on average.

And I have a brutally honest opinion of women's professional sports.

The reality is that somehow women's soccer is working in other parts of the United States. I do scratch my head as to how they have trouble in Boston, but in other markets things are working out. Now, these professionals will never make the money the men make, but they should be able to be paid at the level of men's professional lacrosse or arena football, perhaps.

I was a Breakers fan until one day I asked Heather Mitts for a hug with my autograph and she said no. You can't treat fans that way and expect me to return.

You can't have been much of a fan if one player declining your request for physical contact unrelated to her sport soured you on the entire team.

for anything at any time. Did you ask her to smile too?

I once asked A.J. Feeley for a hug, and the a-hole said no. Ever since then I've hated the Philadelphia Eagles. I sure hope the Patriots can beat them on Sunday.
