The Daily Free Press reports somebody went around the Warren Towers dorms, posting sticky notes on people's doors with a Web link that, when tapped on a phone, downloaded pornographic images.
But shady direct marketing was really common in the freshman dorms when I was at BU. Basically, a company would pay a student in the dorm to either be their direct marketer, shoving flyers under doors, or they'd get a student to sign them in so they could shove flyers under doors.
Just about every week, you'd get a flyer for some nightclub/event or takeout menus shoved under your door or tucked behind the nametag your RA made for your door.
People also did this for University events and/or pranks, but I am thinking complusory porn downloads is so far outside of the behavior code that it is neither.
The linked-to police report also includes this item: "A caller reported at 7:27 p.m. on Wednesday that an RA and RA supervisor had forced everyone out of the women’s bathroom on the 16th floor of A Tower at 700 Commonwealth Ave. The responding officer reported blood present, all showers running, all lockers open and a toilet containing a laptop, a notebook and a teddy bear."
I don't think adam was burying the lede - he probably felt that being titilated by the aftermath of a student's nervous breakdown would be kind of gross.
On the list of possible outcomes of going to a random URL written on a post it note, downloading porn is a pretty minor one... I wouldn't be surprised if there was something more nefarious and less detectable on these phones too.

Not this per se

Should have posted the links on tissues infused with lotion instead.
Talk about burying the lede...

Rubbernecking mental illness is not cool

Agreed, and why did the Daily Free Press report details?
Knowing that some student had a breakdown might be newsworthy, since a trend there might tell us about a problem that needs something done about it.
The details seem just cheap sensationalism, and harassing of the student.
Other students will know who had a breakdown. They don't need help with gossip to make the environment more hostile for the student returning.
