Drunk drag racer admits to death of friend

Erix Santiago, 26, of Dorchester, pleaded guilty today to charges of motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol, drag racing, and speeding in connection with the death of his friend and passenger, Errol Barrett, last May.

Santiago was sentenced to five to six years in prison, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, which had sought seven to ten.

According to the DA's office, Santiago was drag racing his 1994 Civic while drunk down Rutherford Avenue around 3 a.m. on May 26 when he lost control. His car flipped over repeatedly and struck a light pole:

The light pole penetrated the passenger’s seat area, killing Barrett. Post-collision analysis showed that the car was traveling at about 50 mph in a 40 mph zone when Santiago lost control, and medical experts would have testified at trial that Santiago's blood-alcohol level was higher than .20 when he was hospitalized afterwards.

Boston's other giant hole

Mothballed

Some Allston residents (including blogger Harry Mattison) have taken to picketing wherever they think politicians would show up (such as last night's at-large council forum in Brighton), to protest the way Harvard bought up much of the neighborhood and now is just letting it lie fallow.

Tufts students asked not to burn down dorms while power is out

Among the electric customers to lose power due to the exploding manholes of doom today is Tufts University. Students are being asked not to light candles and to walk in groups if they have to go outside at night if the lights still aren't back on. The school says lights could be out for another eight to ten hours.

Local newspaper chain rescinds pay cuts

Dan Kennedy posts a memo from GateHouse Media New England CEO Rick Daniels announcing the end of cuts put into place over the summer:

... We are in a position to restore the cuts because GHMNE is again generating sufficient cash flows to be clearly and safely in the black. ...

However, he cautioned the chain is not out of the woods yet because the economy continues to suck.

The elderly Russian Jews of Wallingford Road got their voting instructions last night

Menino for mayor, Ciommo for district councilor and Arroyo, Connolly, Murphy and Pressley for at-large councilors, according to somebody who has a copy of the sample ballot distributed last night on the Brighton road.

Wallingford is home to the Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly, whose residents basically vote the way local ward bosses and Menino backers Naakh Vysoky and Serge Bologov tell them to, and, yes, who would think that Boston in the 21st century has ward bosses - or that Boston has any kind of slate? There's also Uncle Frank over in Chinatown (you think the three of them ever get together and compare notes?).

The issue actually came up at last night's Brighton Allston Improvement Association candidate forum, where Arroyo was asked to explain why several hundred Russian Jews had turned out en masse for him in the preliminary (he said it was because of his work on immigration reform).
