Mayoral roundup: City workers

Michael Flaherty proposes that city workers who haven't already agreed to wage freezes work an unpaid day once a every other month for the next twelve months. He says this would save the city almost $20 million a year, or enough to pay for the costs of unemployment and health benefits for all the workers the city plans to lay off.

Meanwhile, Kevin McCrea says this wouldn't be necessary if it weren't for 165 new city workers he says Menino has hired over the past year.

What? Jonathan Papelbon is endorsing Flaherty? Does the Papelbot even know there's an election this year?

Just when you thought you couldn't love the turnpike any more

Herald: Pike plagued by weekend traffic jams.

Seems lots of tolltakers reported in sick and the turnpike no longer calls in replacement workers. So, do you think all those tolltakers were sick?

Not so pleasant end to evening for one West Roxbury man and his cabbie

Boston Police report that a cab driver taking two men home from an evening at the Pleasant Cafe in Roslindale ended up getting choked by one of them. However, he managed to get to Area E-5 in West Roxbury for an unscheduled delivery.

Police say the cab driver had dropped off one of the two men at LaGrange and Cowing around 10:30 p.m. and was nearing Washington when the second guy asked to be left off. According to police, the cabbie told him what he owed, but the guy insisted the other passenger had already paid:

Per victim, when he told the suspect that he had to pay, the suspect reached through the plexi-glass, and grabbed the victim by the neck ripping off his gold necklace. The victim then reported to officers that the suspect kicked out the rear window. The victim, at this time, drove to the district station where the suspect was removed from the car.

Edward G. McDonagh, 42, of West Roxbury, was arrested and charged with malicious destruction of property and assault and battery.

Innocent, etc.

T says something: You're going to see something tomorrow

The MBTA informs us of a renewed push on its "See something, say something" campaign tomorrow morning:

At dozens of stations around the nation's fifth busiest public transportation system, MBTA Transit Police will be joined by bus, subway, and Commuter Rail personnel in talking with customers and distributing tens of thousands of the MBTA's Transit Watch pamphlets that encourage people to report:

An unaccompanied bag or package in a remote area
Any passengers behaving oddly
A group operating in an orchestrated or rehearsed manner
Suspicious odors, fluids, or other substances

At Back Bay Station, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley, MBTA General Manager Daniel Grabauskas, Transit Police Chief Paul MacMillan will hand out the pamphlets to commuters.
