Alleged drug mule hospitalized after balloons full of heroin burst in his stomach

A man found unconscious at the Wyndham Hotel in Chelsea will be arraigned as soon as he recovers from the heroin overdose he got when some of the balloons burst, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Doctors recovered some of the balloons from the stomach of Luis Sanabria-Morales, 40, but he may still have more plastic-coated heroin inside, the DA's office says. Spokesman Jake Wark says authorities are willing to let nature take its course:

In some cases, such as those in which a person is observed swallowing the drugs or it's very early on in the ingestion, police may get a warrant to have the person's stomach pumped. In a situation like this one, where that opportunity has gone, we usually wait. Doctors take X-rays to track the course of the items and monitor their health throughout. They may take other actions -- potentially including an operation, I guess -- depending on medical necessity and the best interests of the patient/suspect, but that's a medical decision and not a law enforcement one. We're content to wait until the stuff becomes "abandoned property."

Innocent, etc.

WFXT reports a man in his 50s died early this morning after a fire broke out in the third floor of a triple decker on Columbia Street. Associated Press reports the cause is still under investigation.

Jake Kassen, who happened to be passing by Cambridge and Hampshire on his way home, reports:

It was around 12:20am. The police had just arrived but not the fire department. Looks like it took them 20 minutes or so to extinguish the visible flames (From my vantage point) but the house is likely a goner. Sad.

Catch and release, Dookhan style

A man released from prison thanks to possible tampering of the evidence against him by former state chemist Annie Dookhan is scheduled for arraignment today on a new charge of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Torrie Haynes, 30, of Dorchester, was arrested near East Berkeley Street and Harrison Avenue Friday afternoon, the DA's office says:

At the time of his most recent arrest, Haynes was wearing a GPS monitoring device as a condition of a stay of his sentence on the earlier conviction.

Innocent, etc.

A 21-year-old BU student died after a collision at Brighton and Harvard avenues with an MBTA bus.

Scott Eisen reports the bus seems to have simply driven away. WCVB reports police say the driver of the Route 57 bus did not realize he'd hit someone. BostInno reports the driver was taken off the job as the investigation continued.

Boston Biker has some more info on the bicyclist.

Traffic in the area quickly snarled after police shut Harvard Avenue to allow an investigation.

Owner of closed Hyde Park restaurant has another chance to explain why he shouldn't have his liquor license pulled

The Boston Licensing Board gives Michael Tallon another chance tomorrow to convince it not to revoke the license for his Townsends restaurant on Fairmount Avenue, several months after his landlord locked the place up for non-payment of rent.

Tallon didn't show at a similar hearing in September, but the board voted to give him a second chance to explain himself. It's against the law to sit on a liquor license without using it.

Although Tallon did not appear before the board, his landlord, John Button, and representatives from the mayor's office, City Councilor Rob Consalvo and Hyde Park Main Streets did, and all pleaded with the board to pull the license. Button said he had another party interested in opening a restaurant in the space but that he couldn't move forward until the liquor-license issue is resolved - the law also prohibits issuing two liquor licenses for the same address. And city and Main Streets officials said they are tired of seeing a vacant space in what was once considered an up-and-coming part of the neighborhood.

Board hearings begin at 10 a.m. in its eighth-floor hearing room in City Hall.
