Roslindale youth-baseball coach charged with 'enticing' player

Jose Ortega, 41, a coach with the Boston Broncos youth baseball team, was ordered held in lieu of $50,000 bail today at his arraignment on four counts of enticement of a child under 16, one count of unnatural and lascivious acts with a child under 16, and one count of attempting to commit a crime – posing a child under 18 in a state of nudity.

All of the charges read against Ortega in West Roxbury District Court today relate to a single player he recruited for the team earlier this year, in part by claiming major-league connections, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Additional cases are now under investigation, the DA's office says.

Prosecutors are not alleging that Ortega actually touched the boy, but do charge he fondled himself in the boy's presence:

Over the weeks and months that followed [the boy's recruitment] Ortega allegedly began "grooming" the boy in phone conversations, in Facebook messages, and in person. He allegedly asked the boy to enter his van to engage in sexual activity, to come over and shower at Ortega's house, and to take sexualized photos of himself to send to Ortega.

The case first came to light when a relative of the boy observed some of the explicit messages on the boy’s Facebook account.

Innocent, etc.

How to NOT beat the heat

IMAGE(http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo139/JohnAKeith/Random/DSCF1317550x413.jpg)

Smoke was seen billowing off the roof of a building located on Commonwealth Avenue, this afternoon. Twitterer @alertnewengland reported that a rooftop air conditioning unit (presumably, not a window unit, but the condenser) had caught fire.

While that Twitter report had the fire located at 13 Commonwealth Ave, the location of the fire from my cub reporter observance was on the even-side of the street. It was either 16 or 18 Comm Ave.

Google Maps shows several a/c units on the roof of #16 - no signs of any grills, though ...

Odor at BC chemistry building brings large fire-department response

UPDATE, 9:15 p.m.: Boston Fire Department reports: "All meter readings negative. Building will be turned over to BC. City Public Heath will check building again in the morning."

Boston firefighters are at the Merkert Chemistry Center at Boston College this evening, investigating the source of a vapor reported by students entering a third-floor lab. The department declared a Level 3 hazmat situation, which means that firefighters going into the building have to wear full hazmat suits because of the possible risk.

It's the second level-3 response to the Merkert building in a little over a month and at least the third large BFD response to the building in a little over a year.

Youk says farewell on eve of return to Boston

Kevin Youkilis addresses Red Sox fans.

That final game at Fenway was the most emotional day of my life on the baseball field. It could not have been scripted any better. And to all those kids out there in Red Sox Nation, I can give you my Dad’s advice. "Life is like a throw to first base, always aim high."
