Roslindale has the honors: First neighborhood with West Nile Virus this year

The Boston Public Health Commission reports the first mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus this year were found somewhere in Roslindale and the city has started putting larvicide in drains and other places where mosquitoes breed.

The virus, which typically results in no more than flu-like symptoms in people with otherwise healthy immune systems, is spread through mosquito bites. The commission says people can reduce their risks of catching it by using insect repellent outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn and, natch, wearing long pants and shirts with long sleeves. Making sure any screens on doors and windows are in good shape wouldn't hurt either, the commission says.

Boston police commissioner blasts union newsletter for racist, sexist items

Pax Centurion, the newsletter of the local patrolmen's union, is no fan of Police Commissioner Ed Davis. The feeling's mutual. Reacting to a flurry of tweets about the bi-monthly publication, which started yesterday after Simmons College said it regretted advertising in the newsletter, Davis tweeted this morning:

Robin is correct, I thank her. This juvenile conduct is wrong and not rep of today's officer.

MBTA backtracks on $3 commuter rail surcharge

Until today, the MBTA's website announced that, effective July 1, there would be a $3 surcharge for any commuter rail ticket bought on the train -- even if you board at a station such as Belmont or Gloucester, which has no ticket machines and no store anywhere nearby that sells tickets.

Outlying commuter train passengers railed against the new surcharge.

Today, the T has apparently changed the policy again. The website now says:

A $3 surcharge will be added to tickets purchased on-board all trains departing from North, South and Back Bay Stations.

*Monday through Friday customers will be charged $3 surcharge by the conductor when a ticket is purchased on board from a station with a MBTA ticket vending machine or where a Ticket Vendor is open.

Left unclear is how close to a station a ticket vendor needs to be in order for the surcharge to apply.

The only news story I've found so far is in the Herald-News of Fall River, a city that doesn't even have MBTA service.

With fares going up Sunday, will this be the last report for awhile on record T ridership?

The MBTA reports ridership in May increased 2.9% over the previous year, the 16th straight month ridership has gone up.

Green Line usage increased 9.1%, the T says.

He got that right: 'Tell ma I'm not going to see her for a long time'

The Supreme Judicial Court today told Cornelius Brown he'll spend the rest of his life in prison for fatally shooting a man in the back at a July 4th cookout in Mattapan five years ago.

The state's highest court ruled Brown got a fair trial and confirmed his sentence of life without possibility of parole for the death of Michael Wiggins.

The court ruling recounts the basics of the incident, in which Brown fired two shots at Wiggins as Wiggins and others clustered around to watch a fistfight between a couple of cookout attendees. Brown fled the scene and wound up in Bridgewater at a friend's house:

He carried a small bag with clothes and other personal belongings, and said that he needed a place to stay for a couple of days. [The friend] allowed him inside. She later overheard the defendant say on the telephone, "I have a bad feeling about today. Tell ma I'm not going to see her for a long time." The police arrived at Allen's home about two hours after the defendant's arrival, and asked to search her home for the defendant. She consented to the search, and the police located the defendant in a rear bedroom, where he was arrested.
