Allston student faces charges of being a moron

A Mass. College of Art student learned a valuable lesson when some members of the local constabulary showed up at his apartment door around 1:30 a.m. on May 6: Police tend to want to find out who's been taking shots at them with a BB gun. Also, once they're inside, they tend to look around and notice things such as bags and jars full of marijuana and a pill bottle full of Ecstasy. Allegedly, of course.

Nicholas Ford, 22, was arraigned May 6 in Brighton District Court on charges of possession of Class B and Class D substances with intent to distribute, unlawful discharge of a BB gun, and two counts of malicious destruction of property over $250, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Judge David T. Donnelly set bail at $2500.

The DA's office says a couple of cops were on patrol at Harvard and Comm. avenues on May 6 when they heard something strike the roof of their cruiser:

The officers also saw a group of people near 180 Harvard Ave. ducking and taking cover as if hiding from something. A storefront window at that address was later found to be cracked. The officers scanned the area and saw a man in a second floor window racking back the slide of what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun. As the officers drew their service weapons, the man ducked behind a red curtain.

Officers called for backup and then entered 183 Harvard Ave. in search of the occupant of the apartment with red window treatments. The backup officers arrived in time to see a guy emerge from behind the red curtains and shoot out another window, prosecutors allege.

The cops in the building began pounding on the door. Ford, prosecutors say, finally opened the door to ask "What do you guys want?" Police saw a red curtain behind them and detected the odor of burning marijuana.

After advising Ford of his Miranda rights, the officers asked him what he was doing.

"Being stupid," he allegedly responded.

According to the DA's office, Ford told police where the BB gun was; when they opened up the chest of drawers he indicated, they found Ecstasy. After obtaining a search warrant, police say they found numerous bags and jars of marijuana, sandwich bags with seeds in them and a hollowed out book containing a key.

Innocent, etc.

No, mopeds and motorized scooters are not allowed on bike paths

Ride a moped? Aside from the massive amounts of pollution they spew - yes, even your 4-stroke modern scooter): it seems an increasing number of you need a refresher in where you're not allowed to operate your scooter or moped in Massachusetts:

Any pedal bicycle which has a helper motor or a non-pedal bicycle with a motor [...] Cannot be ridden on off-street recreational paths but can use bicycle lanes along roadways.

Contrary to the popular belief of a number of hipster idiots, this means you can't ride your blue-choking-smoke-billowing Puch on the Paul Dudley White Bike Path (the paths that run on either side of the Charles River), nor the Southwest Corridor, nor the Minuteman path.

Even if state law didn't cover it - the majority of parks and paths in the area specifically exclude any motorized vehicles save emergency or maintenance crews, so leave the motorized skateboard/scooter contraption at home or keep it on the street.

Bus driver thought she was being hijacked

Sharina Byrd describes her ordeal.Sharina Byrd describes her ordeal.

It was near the end of another routine run for a driver just settling into her route. But then, out of nowhere, a hulking man grabbed Sharina Byrd's neck with one beefy arm and took control of the 86 bus's steering wheel with the other.

Byrd, a Dorchester resident who has only been driving an MBTA bus without an instructor for three weeks, instinctively pulled the emergency brake up with her left hand, stopping the bus and keeping it from careening into traffic and parked cars on the other side of Chestnut Hill Avenue last night.

At a press conference this morning at the Sullivan Square T stop - where her route begins - Byrd described what happened as she approached the final stop on a run at Cleveland Circle around 7:30 last night. Everything was routine. There were about 15 passengers onboard. And then, "this guy just came out of the blue and grabbed my neck," she said. "I thought I was being hijacked."

As the man, identified as Donald Lyons, 52, of Everett, kept his grip on her - strong enough to hold her, but not to choke her - he reached over with his other hand and turned the wheel to the left, sending the bus onto the other side of the road. As she pulled up the brake - by her left side - she began yelling "Tell me what you want, just tell me what you want!" She said Lyons mumbled something incomprehensible. As soon as the bus stopped, she opened the door. At first, he seemed ready to attack her, but he stumbled out and fled, she said.

Byrd said she doesn't remember Lyons even getting on the bus. None of the passengers rose to stop him, but Byrd said they probably didn't even know what was going on - her typical passengers tend to be college students with their noses in a book or phone. A woman sitting near the front did ride around with an MBTA police officer afterwards - and then raced back to the scene to report the man with trouble keeping his pants up on Comm. Ave.

Byrd credited the training she got at the T for helping her remain calm and doing what she needed to do to keep her passengers and herself safe. Byrd has actually been driving a T bus for 2 1/2 months now - but until three weeks ago, she had an instructor with her.

Watertown to Belmont: Suck it and leave our trackless trolleys alone

The poles holding up the overhead wires for the 71 and 73 electric buses may be too declassé for leafy Belmont, but gritty Watertown wants nothing to do with diesel buses, Wicked Local Watertown reports:

Town Councilor Vincent Piccirilli read several letters from Watertown and Belmont residents requesting that they vote to maintain trolley service to save on noise and air pollution. Residents attending the meeting agreed and many said that the trolley system adds character to the town.

Best Buy machine at Forest Hills looks forelorn, ready for a departure

Soon to be ex-Best Buy machine? Soon to be ex-Best Buy machine?

Unless they're doing some major re-stocking, the bruised and battered Best Buy vending machine at Forest Hills looks to be on its way out, just six months after it was installed. This morning, the curtains were drawn, the displays turned off and the machine empty.

Police: Man grabbed wheel of T bus from driver and tried to ram oncoming traffic

Donald LyonsUPDATE: Lyons was ordered held in lieu of $10,000 bail in Brighton District Court, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Police charge an Everett man who had trouble keeping his pants up had no problems wresting control of an 86 bus and trying to crash it - but was foiled by a fast-thinking rookie driver who managed to apply the emergency brake.

MBTA Transit Police say Donald Lyons, 52, reached across the 24-year-old driver - on the job for just 2 1/2 months - around 7:30 last night and grabbed the bus's steering wheel as it approached Commonwealth Avenue on Chestnut Hill Avenue:

Eating black and gold

Megan shows off the Bruins cupcakes she made when some friends came over to watch the game on Saturday:

My mind wandered from cakes with the Bruins' logo to cupcakes with edible images, but then I put myself in check and reminded myself it was already Friday and whatever I made needed to be doable in just one day with supplies I could easily gather. After doing a bunch of Google image searches, I landed on some Steelers cupcakes (they have similar colors) and took inspiration from those.

With recipe.
