Second mistrial declared for pair charged with killing college student they didn't know

Hey, sexy ladies
Carter

The Suffolk Superior Court jury hearing the murder case against Antwan Carter and Daniel Pinckney for the 2007 gunshot murder of a guy waiting for his mother outside a Roxbury middle school found itself hopelessly deadlocked today. The judge in the case declared a mistrial; a spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney's office said prosecutors would try once more to put the two away for life.

A trial last fall for the two also ended in deadlock and mistrial.

Cedric Steele, a college student and Meals on Wheels volunteer was standing in front of Timilty Middle School on March 14, 2007,waiting for his mom so that they could go buy a cell phone. Prosecutors allege that Carter and Pickney, upset one of their gang friends was shot, went out for revenge that day, intent on gunning somebody down. Steele, prosecutors say, had nothing to do with the beef; the two simply decided to shoot him repeatedly. He died during surgery.

Innocent, etc.

Somebody's watching him like a hawk

Hawk

Our official Eye in the Sky reports looking out his 17th-floor window off Huntington Avenue this afternoon to find somebody looking right back at him. He says there appears to be a nest on the roof of one of the Mass. College of Art buildings on the other side of the street.

He's Treasurer Tim, not Attorney Tim

Which might explain why he sent fundraising e-mails to state legislators's government addresses, which is, oh, what's the word? Oh, right, illegal.

Just a database mistake, Treasurer Tim's PR person says.

Reported rapes up in Jamaica Plain and downtown

The latest stats from Boston Police show that while reported crime in general is down across the city for the first three months of the year, rapes and attempted rapes have jumped from 2 to 9 in District E-13 (Jamaica Plain) and from 2 to 8 in District A-1 (Downtown, Beacon Hill, the North End and Chinatown).

Citywide numbers also show an increase in the number of murders, from 9 to 12 - due to three more murders in districts B-3 and C-11 (Dorchester and Mattapan).

Having a Legal move in down the street probably didn't help now defunct Dedham seafood place

Finz, which offered Legal-style prices if not Legal-style food will be replaced by an Italian place, Wicked Local Dedham reports.

It'll be the latest effort to make a go of the location behind the Holiday Inn, which has seen restaurants come and go over the years. Finz was probably doomed when Legal opened up in Legacy Place last fall.

Where to see the FBI documents the Globe wrote about today

The Globe has an interesting look at the holiest of holies at the J. Edgar Hoover building - the secret room where really, really secret files are stored. The Globe relied on hundreds of pages of memos, but, naturally, doesn't seem to think you might be interested in looking at those memos yourself. Thankfully, Bob Ambrogi points us to a copy of them all (17M PDF file).

Boston does not have a Water Disaster Department

District D-14 is trying to get the word out, after an elderly couple in Allston/Brighton let in a guy wearing a "Water Disaster Department" on March 27. While they were down in the basement "testing" the washing machine, an accomplice went through their house looking for money - and managed to pry open a safe.

D-14 reports another Brighton homeowner was robbed in a similar fashion the same day by three guys who claimed they were from the Water Department and had to check his basement for flooding.

Clearly, a replacement for the French Toast Alert System is needed this week

But what's the proper metaphor?

In honor of Passover, I was thinking a system from one piece of dry matzoh straight from the box for sunny, dry days, all the way up to a giant, soggy matzoh ball for a day like today, but who rushes out to buy matzoh meal just because it's raining? Boots, maybe? Sump pumps? Other ideas?
