Boston City Council to consider whether cab drivers getting screwed on credit-card readers

The council this week agreed to schedule a hearing on whether forcing Boston cabs to be equipped with credit-card machines last year is hurting individual drivers.

In a formal call for a hearing, Councilors Maureen Feeney and Stephen Murphy say the city's "radio associations" may be charging individual drivers more than they should (they're allowed to charge drivers 6% per transaction even if their banks charge less), the drivers get hit with additional bank fees, they can't access their money immediately and stupid passengers vandalize the machines.

Councilors Sal LaMattina, Charles Yancey, Bill Linehan, Chuck Turner and Rob Consalvo also signed onto the Feeney/Murphy resolution, which now goes to the council's Committee on City and Neighborhood Services and Veterans Affairs to get a hearing date.

Carr writes about annoying rich people

Yeah, so? We're talking about Kathy Carr, wife of Man of the People Carr, who penned a hate letter to Wellesley parents. Why Wellesley? Oh, that's where the Carrs live. What? You expected they lived in Dorchester or Chelsea? The Swellesley Report notes the absence of any reader comments on the online version of the column; there apparently were a ton, but they were so negative GateHouse took them down and told people to write a letter to the editor on paper. Presumably with a quill pen.

The Bailey Savings and Loan theory of bank accounts

Mike the Mad Biologist explains why he recently used this bank finder to set up an account at Wainwright Bank:

... While the revenge factor is nice (why give those big bankster assholes your money), there are legitimate benefits to do this. First, the banks listed at Move Your Money are not zombie banks (otherwise, they wouldn't be listed): they'll actually be lending your money, which helps everyone. Second, these banks tend to lend money locally, so your deposits are helping local businesses and homeowners--which also helps you directly. Given leverage requirements, in many places, particularly after the collapse of Big Shitpile, moving $20,000 into a local bank in many places means you just financed someone's home or a small business. ...

Walshgate: How come top Mass. Dem couldn't hook up with Rachel Maddow by more traditional means?

UPDATE: Maddow declares she isn't running; appreciates a good joke as much as anyone.

OK, so it was kind of interesting this morning that some people had set up a Facebook page to try to convince MSNBC talent and Northampton resident Rachel Maddow to run against Scott Brown in 2012 (they're now 5.2% of the way toward their goal of getting 10,000 people to sign up). It got even funner this afternoon when John Walsh, chairman of the Democratic State Committee, got wind of the boomlet and posted what sure seemed like it was meant to be a private message on the Tweety:

Some are talking about you running vs Scott Brown in '12. I'm Chair of MA Dem Party. My email is [email protected] cell-617-650-9311

Apparently I'm not the only one disappointed to learn that politicians don't have instant access to everybody's phone numbers (you know how losing candidates always call the winning candidate on election night - where do they get their phone numbers from?) - there's now a Twitter discussion on #walshgate. And please, for goodness sake, don't go calling Walsh and asking if his refrigerator is running.

Amy Derjue, who has some familiarity with Twitter issues, provides this thought:

#walshgate is like clicking "reply to all" in Outlook. But to the whole internet. Cue overwhelming paranoia whenever DMing from now on.
