Trapped in a train on the Longfellow Bridge

JJ Leslie was among the unfortunate who spent more than 30 minutes in a dead inbound Red Line train on the Longfellow tonight. He live-tweeted the experience:

9:01. MBTA Red Line inbound broken down just before Charles MGH. 30 minute downtime. At least we are not in the tunnel.

9:11. Stuck on the bridge. Now getting a push. One kid just took a leak in a cup. A few people freaked out. Swearing at driver.

9:12. A T staff in uniform but off duty stuck with us. He is trying to rationalze with angry people. Not working.

9:15. Now waiting in the cold for the next train. Lots of people.

9:17. I'd rather be driving a defective Toyota then be squished in this Red Line train right now.

Meanwhile, Greg Staples was on the train right after Leslie's at Kendall:

mack daddy is on the train explaining how to be a pimp.

LNG through Boston Harbor: Safe or unsafe?

Adam Balsam says Tom Menino and Sal LaMattina should stop their posturing, listen to the Coast Guard and admit giant LNG tankers are safe.

Matt Conti, who lives in the North End, acknowledges the risk of a neighborhood-consuming fireball is low, but notes all the precautions the Coast Guard takes and says Boston shouldn't have to be the only city in the US where giant LNG tankers are allowed in a densely populated area.

Boston cop who sent racist, misogynist Gates e-mail fired

Boston Police announced today that Commissioner Ed Davis has fired Justin Barrett, a police officer who sent out a mass e-mail referring to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates as "a jungle monkey."

In a statement, Davis said:

After a thorough investigation of this matter, it is evident that Officer Barrett’s actions do not comply with that standard. Given the egregious nature of his actions and its effect on our community, I strongly believe that the only appropriate discipline is termination. I commend the officers who voiced their disapproval of Officer Barrett's actions. Our department has a top to bottom commitment to community policing, which is founded in trust. We will not allow the actions of one to damage the community relationships that are essential to our mission to serve the citizens of Boston.

Barrett, 36, had been a Boston cop since 2007. He was most recently assigned to District B-3, which covers Mattapan and part of Dorchester. In August, Barrett filed a federal lawsuit against the city for the disciplinary action against him.
