When Mayor Curley saved the lives of 50,000 people skating on Jamaica Pond

NotWhitey posts a newspaper account of a giant skating festival on Jamaica Pond (skating on the pond? Well, yeah, they also used to have skinny dipping in the summer for men) that had to be called off when Curley himself noticed the ice about to give way.

Disoriented man falls out of moving train; passengers apply tourniquet

UPDATE: The MBTA says a homeless man from Revere who'd been causing a ruckus on the trip fell out of the train as it started leaving the station. His arm was injured; passenger applied tourniquet and he was taken to Mass. General for treatment. Transit Police report.

A man who may have gotten impatient at how slowly his 8:30 p.m. Rockport train was getting into Lynn's Central Square jumped from the first car last night.

Downtown Lynn reports he was seriously injured and that rescue crews found him near the last car. The Lynn Daily Item reports he suffered a "life-threatening head injury." MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said this morning the man, 59, survived the fall; his injuries "are not considered life threatening."

Although the MBTA brought in a bus for most of the passengers on the train, commuters in the first car were held for questioning as late as 10:40 p.m., Downtown Lynn says. Charlene McBride reports the train finally pulled out of Lynn around 11:30 p.m.

The T described the situation as "an ill passenger."

Alleged pepper-sprayed Southie mugger captured along with bonus second wanted man

BustedBustedCall it serendipity: Boston Police report that when officers closed in on a guy they knew had an outstanding warrant, they also found Joseph Pano, who allegedly got only a squirt of pepper spray in his face when he tried to mug a woman at knifepoint on Tuesday.

Police say officers on patrol on E. 8 St. around 11 a.m. today spotted a guy wanted on an outstanding warrant. When they got out of their cruiser, he ran away, and into an apartment at 300 E. 8 St. Police say his attempt to close the front door on one of the cops failed.

As they were getting Michael Farrell, 23, ready for transport down to C-6 - which police say included relieving him of a knife - they noticed another guy hiding in a bedroom:

Officers conducted a protective sweep of the apartment and found Joseph Pano, 36, of Boston, who was known to officers with a Wanted Poster for an outstanding warrant (Attempted Armed Robbery) who was possibly armed. Pano was located hiding underneath a bed. He was placed under arrest and found in possession of two clear plastic bags with a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. Pano will also be charged for Possession of Class B Drugs.

In addition to the drug charges, Pano faces charges of assault with intent to rob, assault by means of a dangerous weapon and assault and battery. Farrell faces charges of larceny over $250 and possession of an illegal knife.

Both are due for arraignment in South Boston District Court.

Innocent, etc.

Jamaica Plain service station shut down for making a complete mess of itself

The Boston Fire Department reports that inspectors found serious problems today at Mike's Service Center, 626 Centre St.

Among the issues: Illegal propane heaters, a leaking oil tank and 12 vehicles on the site despite the lack of a repair permit. A hazardous-materials inspector had power and water to the building shut off and ordered the owner (Mike?) to clean up the oil spill and get rid of the vehicles.
