Oedipus to continue Christmas tradition on station that loathed him

WFNX media sib Phoenix breaks the news:Former 'BCN program director Oedipus will do his annual Christmas marathon on WFNX.

Or as the Phoenix put it: "Hell freezes over." As Boston Radio Watch notes, 'FNX/Phoenix daddy Steve Mindich once had this to say about Oedipus: "He acted in an unfairly competitive, disingenuous, and often slimy way."

But Oedipus seems to think the same thing about CBS, which turned 104.1 into a pop station this year, so apparently all's forgiven. Actually, the healing began this summer.

Boston's West Zone: Where all the children are above average

Mommy on the Floor is faced with that toughest of Boston parenting issues: She's decided to send her child to a public school and that means dealing with the frustrating lottery system for kindergarten. Like a good prospective BPS parent, she's been going on a lot of school tours. And she's noticed something:

... [E]veryone seems to think their kid is gifted. No one asks, "How are you going to help my delayed and troubled child succeed?" The question is always, "How do you handle gifted children?" This question gets repeatedly ask at every single tour.

Last time this happened, after yet another woman asked the principle this, Jen turned to me and said, "Does she mean that kid who just fell out of her chair and onto her ass?" Yep. That's the gifted kid she was talking about. Apparently, we have a whole lot of gifted kids in our zone.

A suggestion for WGBH's "Beat the Press"

Tonight's "Beat the Press" is scheduled to discuss the Amanda Knox verdict:

After being convicted of murder, much of the reporting by the US media sided with Knox, questioning the fairness of the Italian justice system. Was it similar to the British coverage of the Louise Woodward verdict?

Hey, here's an idea for this Boston-based show: How about examining why the US media seems more fascinated with some woman 5,000 miles away than with dramatic cases closer to home? The same day Knox was convicted, a Suffolk County jury convicted Demetrius Wardsworth of murdering a man at a Roxbury housing project simply because he and his buddy felt like killing somebody. They didn't even know the guy they shot to death. The Globe had a longish story on Knox; a short brief on Wardsworth. What is it about pretty young white women?
