When life gives you acorns, make acorn flour - and go mad

Tall Asian Dude reports on his experiment with turning all those nuts in his yard into flour for pancakes:

... [A]fter investing several hours of selecting, hammering, shelling, sorting, skinning and sorting again and then ending up with maybe a cup of acorn meat is making me reconsider. I may go through one more container of sorted acorns just to have enough to bake or cook something, but I think this is going to be a "learning experience" kind of project. (i.e. I've learned that I never want to do this again, unless maybe if I'm trying to torture some hypothetical future children with their own "learning experience" or something.) ...

UH will be in database surgery on Sunday

I'll be upgrading the software on Sunday (yes, dear regulars, finally), so if you can't connect to the site in the afternoon or parts of the site disappear, that's why - you know how delicate surgery is (and yes, I've learned my lesson: Back up the whole database before I do anything! Not that anything will go wrong, unless, of course, it does).

Tiny taste of the new look:

Police: Thief wilted when things came to a head outside Back Bay Shaw's

Boston Police report a guy who made off with a salad from the salad bar at the Pru Shaw's yesterday tried to hold a woman up on Huntington Avenue even as he was stuffing the salad into this mouth.

A security guard who was trailing Hector Tetzaguic, 38, of Dorchester, grabbed him and held him until police arrived, BPD says. He was charged with shoplifting and attempted larceny from a person.

Innocent, etc.

The MBTA might want to inform its police officers that photography is not a crime

Adam Weiss reports one of those black-suited special-forces T cops told him to stop taking pictures at the Government Center T stop this afternoon because, apparently, nobody's ever told him about the MBTA's official photography policy - which says picture taking is allowed on T property (just without a flash or tripod). Weiss says:

At least he was nice about it this time. He apologized, saying he didn't know the rules. Let me go on my way. Nothing against the cop, just the T for not informing him.

A Brookline Metco parent called this morning to report recent crimes
against METCO students. Another Brookline Metco parent, who happens to be a Boston police officer, reported that Metco students have been targeted by Boston Public School students.

Boston students are jumping Metco students after they get off their bus and stealing electronics (i.e. Cell phones, digital cameras, etc).

Panera Bread, Lebanese restaurant look to open in West Roxbury

Panera Bread goes before the Boston Licensing Board on Dec. 2 for a license to open a restaurant and patio at 75 Spring St. - in the same little mini-mall as Finagle-A-Bagel (Ed. question: Hmm, does this mean that never overly crowded bagel place is closing? Or staying on to compete?).

If approved, the patio would have seats for up to 16, and would mean a certain kidlet who loves Panera Bread would no longer have to ask her father to drive her all the way over to Dedham.

Meanwhile, renovation work continues apace at the old Spring Blossom, 1249 VFW Parkway, where, according to this article, Ghassan Samaha, the owner of Nicole's Pizza in the South End, is building a Lebanese restaurant. He also has a permit for a patio.

When the two restaurants open, that will bring the number of West Roxbury restaurants with outdoor seating to four (Bertucci's and Skara Grill also have patios) - six if you include the little tables the King puts out and the two tables DeNo's has.
