Our inscrutable governor

Jay wonders if Deval Patrick might have better poll numbers if only we knew him better.

Then again, we got to know his predecessor pretty well, and that didn't exactly help his Massachusetts poll numbers.

The lengths some people go for a pair of sneakers

Not just any sneakers, of course, but fancy-shmancy sneakers named after a rare lobster. Fun and Fearless in Boston reports on how she hooked her boyfriend up with a pair.

Chim-chiminey, chim-chiminey, chim-chim-charoo, some sweeps are really out just to screw you

Wellesley Police explain all those calls we've been getting from "your local chimney sweep" that sound like they're coming from a boiler room: It's a scam:

... The caller was given a very low verbal quote for the chimney sweeping, being told she would receive a considerable "Senior Citizen" discount. The price quoted was $49.

Once the victim agreed to have the chimney swept, two individuals began the work immediately. While the workers were there, they began to tell the victim that much more work was needed, including additional parts and labor. The victim refused to agree to the extra work. When the workers finished, they informed the victim that they had performed the work anyway, and the bill would now be $2000. A preliminary review of the work done shows that nothing significant, including sweeping, was actually done. Additionally, the workers did not clean up, and left trash at the house. ...

Housing recovery has been going on for 30 months now, right?

Somebody who pays way more attention to newspaper real-estate stories than I e-mailed me to note that real-estate trade groups have been proclaiming an end to plummeting housing prices and sales in Globe articles for 30 months now:

12/29/06: "Still, said David Wluka, the realtors association's president, signs that the market might be stabilizing are beginning to appear."

12/11/07: "Bucking conventional wisdom, a trade group for real estate agents yesterday said the battered housing market is on the verge of stabilizing and inched-up its outlook for 2007 and 2008 home sales."

6/30/09: "There is a clear trend home prices declines are moderating -- another sign the beleaguered housing market is stabilizing..."

She defects from Coffee Nation

Georgy explains why she's trying to quit her caffeine habit and how it's going:

... So, two weeks in, I don't feel more or less tired, really. I've been trying to eat healthier and get more exercise on top of dropping the coffee, so it's hard to discern the health effects. The biggest challenge in giving up coffee has been feeling like I'm depriving myself of a morning treat. I realized how much I'd been depending on coffee as a sort of reward. "You had to get up early this morning, and it's cloudy out! You deserve a coffee." It didn't take much. But I guess if that's the worst part of giving up coffee, it's not so bad. I shouldn't have to give myself a special reward just for getting out the door in the morning. ...

Major mess at Logan

Yuck

Massport arrivals list at 11 p.m. Yellow means delays of up to 45 minutes; red means even longer delays.

Lots of canceled, diverted and delayed flights at Logan Airport tonight thanks to fog and, apparently, some sort of problem with the system used to guide planes into the airport.

Spencer McEwen tweets he has now been stuck sitting at T.F. Green on a Logan-bound Virgin plane longer than if the airline had simply put everybody on buses and driven them to Logan - and then driven them back to Green for the hell of it and then back to Boston. They've already had to pump out the plane's waste systems so passengers can relieve themselves again as they wait for "the Logan approach system" to get fixed.

UPDATE, 11:09 p.m.: McEwen reports the flight crew is now rationing what little food they have: Children and the elderly get first dibs.

UPDATE, 12:04 a.m: McEwen tweets on arrival in Boston:

Touchdown in Boston. Everybody cheered and clapped.

Steve Garfield tweets he was late getting in from LaGuardia due to the fog.
