The dead trees of Allston

Harry Mattison reports:

Harvard planted approximately 150 street trees on Western Avenue in 2007 and it is amazing how many of them are now dead or far from flourishing. ...

There are good neighborhood newspapers - and then there is the East Boston Times

Jimbo says it's not so much the continual typos ("ACADMEMIC AWARDS BANQUET") that get him so much as the near complete lack of any actual reporting in the East Boston Times:

... On the back page is what we've come to expect from the Times: eight static photos of Chamber of Commerce members. (There is also the obligatory photo of politicians on page 1.) This marks 199 weeks in a row we've seen the same faces doing the same things in our local newspaper. The 2000 census said that there are 38,413 people living in East Boston. Not all of them can be found at meetings of the Chamber of Commerce.

MBTA thinking maybe subway trains, trolleys don't need two drivers apiece

In the rest of the world, trains run with just one driver. And by "rest of the world," be sure to include East Boston and Revere.

The Carmen's Union, of course, raises the specter of national security, in "a post-9/11 world."

Dim sum with kids in tow

FoodieMommy puts in a vote for Green Tea off Rte. 9 and Eliot Street in Newton:

... Rather than ordering dim sum from carts, at Green Tea you choose off of an extensive menu. Although you don't get the instant gratification of eating what you pointed as, as you do at Chau Chow City or China Pearl, the food is made to order. This means that the chicken wings (my 3 year old's favorite) were piping hot, crisp and moist. ...

The world is full of stupid people and they all seemed to have headed for Castle Island yesterday

Meghan chronicles Teh Stupid on display at the edge of South Boston yesterday, including:

... the 4 shirtless men on the pier who were there for a day of fishing with 3 kids in tow. They had a cooler with them. They appeared very VERY drunk. And then we saw them drinking Goldschlager out of the bottle. EW. How drunk do you have to be to drink Goldschlager out of the bottle? When we left they were contemplating jumping off the pier. If you've never been to Castle Island, you probably won't understand that, but let me just say jumping off the pier into the very rocky edge of a very busy channel that is an entrance/exit of Boston Harbor is one of the more brainless things they could have done that day. ...
