Survey says: Arlington wouldn't mind if chickens came home to roost

A (granted, completely unscientific) poll says not only would most people in Arlington not object if the town allowed people to keep chickens in their backyards, 9% said they would strongly consider getting some live fowl themselves, YourArlington reports.

The town's been clucking about the issue thanks to Town Meeting articles that would legalize chicken keeping. The Board of Health, however, prefers to keep the idea cooped up, citing the potential for noise and odors, and selectmen say they are reluctant to back the idea without health board approval.

Not asked in the survey: What's a hen weigh?

Kevin McCrea having second thoughts about running for mayor

Kevin McCrea reports he's registered to run for both mayor and city council.

He says he'd rather run for mayor, but he wants to make sure his voice is heard this fall and just in case he decides he can't raise enough money to run for mayor, he'll try for an at-large council seat:

My first priority is to be elected Mayor and give the citizens of Boston the honest and accountable leadership they deserve. However I am the first to admit that I do not have the same access to money and special interest influence that my opponents have. They are all entrenched politicians who have been involved in 'go along to get along' back room deals that have favored insiders at the expense of the public. I still want the opportunity to change this city, and that is why I am keeping the option of running for City Council open.

Knocked to ground and beaten in East Boston mugging

Area A-7 reports a man walking home from Maverick station around 9:40 p.m. on April 7 was knocked to the ground at Everett and Cottage streets by a couple of thugs who then "beat him around the face and head" and stole his iPod, T-Mobile cell phone and $250. "The suspects stated that they had guns and that they would shoot the victim if he turned around."

The suspects are described as a black guy, medium build, in a brown hoodie, gray pants and new white sneakers, and a guy of unkown race clad in dark clothing.

Wakefield turns into stopper as Sox finally give him runs

You have definitely earned Baseball Boyfriend of the Day honors.

Red: Screw the JFK conspiracy:

... Tim Wakefield's the real riddle wrapped inside an enigma wrapped inside a damn fine French pastry. One day he's Cy Young, the next he's Matt Young. One minute I'm cursing his name to the heavens, the next I'm calling him up, asking if he'd like me to put a fresh coast of wax on his fancy sports cars. ...

'A learning experience'

That's how the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority chairman describes the Easter Sunday fiasco:

Also, as NECN reports, the authority set lower-than-normal staffing levels for the peak periods on Easter.

Did Marriott killer strike before?

Last night at the Marriott

Surveillance image from the Marriott last night shows possible killer. Via BPD.

Boston Police report detectives are looking at whether whoever murdered a woman at the Marriott in Copley Square last night held up another woman at gunpoint at the nearby Westin early on April 10.

Police add that last night's victim, a New Yorker apparently in town to sell massage services advertised on Craigslist, died after a struggle. They are withholding her name until her next of kin can be notified.

Best used and specialty bookstores

A Globe gallery feature on the best used and specialty bookstores:
http://www.boston.com/ae/books/gallery/usedbooksto...

My vote for best used bookstore goes to the Brattle Book Shop on West Street. The outdoor carts have great $1-$3-$5 bargains, and with an excellent selection inside. I have taken out-of-town visitors there and they have raved about it too.

Although Boston & Cambridge have lost a number of their bookstores over the years, this remains a great place for book lovers.
