Ken Bauer reported from his car, stuck on Storrow Drive around 8 p.m., that some fool coach-bus driver managed to get his behemoth onto Soldiers Field Road/Storrow Drive eastbound just past the Doubletree, but that he also managed to avoid lopping the top of the bus off until state troopers arrived to block traffic so that he could back the bus back the fool way he came.

Things didn't work out so well that other time.

Nearly 50 years after it was remodeled, the Circle Cinemas has fallen on hard times. While the building itself is likely to make way for a new development, some people think the sign itself is worth saving.

Mr. Butch

Around 8 a.m. on July 12, 2007, Mr. Butch, the mayor of Allston, was driving his scooter down Brighton Avenue when hit a light pole. He was 56 and left a large community of people who knew him from his time on the streets of Allston and, before he was exiled after BU yuppified it, Kenmore Square.

Christopher Arthur took this picture of Mr. Butch - who graduated Berklee - and later turned it into a painting on the last suitcase he carried.

A Cambridge Street Thai restaurant has changed its request for a later closing time from 3 a.m. to 1 a.m.

The Boston Licensing Board now considers whether to let A@Time extend its serving times from the current 11 p.m. At a hearing today, a restaurant co-owner said he cut back the proposed closing time after meeting with the executive board of the Allston Civic Association, which said it could support 1 a.m.

The board sets hours for Boston restaurants and must approve any requests to stay open later.

There's been an outbreak of young folks sipping their iced coffee from Mason and pickle jars as they ride the Green and Red lines.

Matt Aromando tweets from the Green Line:

This is the most Allston thing I've seen in a while.

Hnasko replies:

Hipster with pickle jar full of iced coffee spotted on MBTA at Kenmore. Not just an allston phenomena.

The Boston Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire that started at the triple decker at 17 Mansfield St. around 7:10 a.m. and then spread to the two houses on either side and the house in the rear.

One resident was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation, the department says. A total of 19 people were displaced.

Today's the last day for filing comments on the state's proposed two-year redo of the Cambridge Street overpass and the Franklin Street pedestrian bridge. Some people aren't all that happy with the current proposal, and think the state could do better to make it safer for pedestrians to get across the turnpike and train tracks. They even have a petition to attach your name to.

Oh, good God, Allston. On the heels of the Boston Licensing Board letting the Harvard Avenue McDonald's open at 5 a.m., A@Time on Cambridge Street will seek permission to stay open until 3 a.m.

This is exactly what Allston Civic Association President Paul Berkeley warned about, that his members are "fearful we're just going to become a 24-hour community."

A@Time goes before the licensing board on July 10, in the board's eighth-floor hearing room at City Hall.

Today is the last day for Bicycle Bill's on North Harvard Street. Its Facebook page now sports an icon reading "I'm retired. Do it yourself!" as well as a notice that the shop closes forever at 5 p.m. today.

The Boston Licensing Board says the presence of methadone patients who aren't breaking any laws isn't reason to keep the McDonald's at Harvard and Comm. avenues from opening at 5 a.m.

Its approval means the burger/Egg McMuffin emporium can now open 21 hours a day. It previously had opened at 7 a.m., which franchisee Bob King said meant he could not serve the crowds clamoring for McDonald's take on breakfast earlier in the morning.

The owner of McDonald's franchises at Harvard and Comm Ave. and on Western Avenue wants to start opening his outlets at 5 a.m. - and to extend the Western Ave. closing time to 3 a.m. He says he's already taken steps to deal with an increasing problem with methadone patients hanging out at the Harvard Ave. location.

At a Boston Licensing Board hearing today, the Allston Civic Association opposed the hour extensions. Association President Paul Berkeley said that with some outlets seeking later hours at night and others seeking earlier hours in the morning, members are "fearful we're just going to become a 24-hour community."

We're writing here to announce a new project commemorating the Circle Cinema, which has been a Brighton landmark since 1940. The theater, and its iconic CIRCLE sign, are scheduled to meet the wrecking ball later this year.

We are a photographer and a sociologist who have teamed up to collect memories, photos, and opinions of the theater and its sign (positive, negative, indifferent). We are also looking to interview folks with stories to tell about the theater. Was your first date at the Circle? Work the concession stand in high school? See a memorable film there that has stayed with you ever since? We want to hear from you.

Peeled truck

Boston Ward 4 Dems snapped the latest BU Bridge/Grand Junction casualty: A truck whose driver apparently and rather suddenly lost the ability to read, right in the middle of the evening rush hour today. On the eastbound side, at least.
