Spring volleyball at Carson Beach in South Boston

Across the city today, winter-weary Bostonians shed their coats, or, at least, unzipped them a bit as they marveled at temperatures that approached 60.

On Carson Beach in South Boston, Eileen Murphy watched a game of volleyball (a brisk wind aided the windsurfers in Pleasure Bay).

In the Public Garden, as 617 Images shows us, a couple actually had a picnic:

Human tiger on the Esplanade

Enoch Pratt spotted this chimera on the Esplanade today, goes: "Why?" to which we, of course, reply: "Why not?"

Mist above the Charles River

Mix ice, snow, rain and temperatures in the 50s and you get mist rising from the Charles and the Lagoon, as Adam Shutes shows us.

The Boston Courant reports state transportation officials are working on plans to stick both sides of Storrow Drive under a Longfellow Bridge arch, which would let Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary expand one of its buildings and dig a new parking garage under the current Infirmary parking lot in exchange for giving up the parking lot for the new road alignment and new parkland (Ed. note: Link goes to a JPG image of the article, because the Courant remains one of the few newspapers in America to resist the Web).

State Police report finding a man who plunged 50 feet off the footbridge around 2:20 p.m.

Witnesses said the man was leaning his back against the concrete wall on the east side of the footbridge - which connects the Esplanade with Beacon Street - when put his arms out and appeared to do a back flip up over the wall and down toward the roadway below. The man did not land on Storrow Drive itself, but rather, plummeted farther down to the Berkeley on-ramp, which at that point is lower elevation than the main line. The distance he fell was an estimated 50 feet at least.

Esplanade suspect

State Police report this is the man suspected of attacking a woman on the Esplanade near Mass. Ave. early Friday.

Police do not think the guy is responsible for a series of attacks in 2007 and 2009.

Anyone with information about the man in these images or the incident itself is asked to call the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817.

They started the Esplanade fireworks a bit early tonight - just in time for them to end and evacuate the area as a storm plowed across the area, knocking out power in at least part of Waltham and Cambridge and sending skittish dogs and children under beds.

Christopher reports:

Have to give Boston Pops organizers credit on timing. Made it from the esplanade lagoon to Kenmore JUST as the rain started.

Lined up on the Esplanade

Organizers are moving the Boston Pops concert and fireworks to tomorrow night due to Arthur. The real festivities will take the place of the practice concert, which will not take place at all.

The state plans to keep Storrow Drive open for the morning commute, but to shut it at noon, so if you drive to work on Storrow tomorrow, keep that in mind.

Officials say the weather could still force a cancellation of the show and that they will probably make a go/no-go decision late afternoon.

Why not Saturday? State Police say there are issues with performers' contracts that would prohibit that.
