Hammock by the Charles River

JGD spotted an occupied hammock by the Charles late yesterday afternoon.

It might have been a remnant from a more organized hammock hang.

State Police report a woman walking by the lagoon around 2:50 a.m. was pushed to the ground by a man, who was then chased off by several passersby.

She was taken to Mass. General for treatment of minor injuries.

The man is described as white or Hispanic, bald, about 5'7" or 5'8" tall.

Ride on the Esplanade

Jared Wickerham spent some time on the Esplanade at sunset today.

Large numbers of BPD officers descended on the Esplanade and the BU Bridge shortly after 4 p.m., when a 911 caller reported a man in camouflage running around near the bridge with a rifle. Cambridge Police sent some officers to their side of the bridge as well.

In fact, it turned out there was a whole troop of men running around the Esplanade with rifles - but they turned out to be BU ROTC cadets doing some training with fake rifles.

Fireworks over the Charles

Nick Gillham watched the fireworks from Cambridge.

Rob Bellinger watched the fireworks from a South Boston rooftop:

One highlight was when Keith Lockhart turned the baton over to Transit Police Officer Richard Donohue.

Several people said attendance seemed to be down on the Esplanade, although it was hard to say if it was because of the increased security or the increased heat. Jeff Tamagini didn't think much of the shutdown of the Mass. Ave. bridge:

Well the fireworks from Mass. Ave. bridge were subpar and pointless. Let's hope it was a one time thing - I want my bridge back!

The hitch? The simulcast of the music. See Kaz's comments, below.

Star Fleet protester

State Police didn't just ensure that Fourth Amendment protesters dispersed "peacefully" at the Esplanade today, they took pictures of some of them to post to Twitter, including this representative from Star Fleet.

A Waltham man was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail today on charges he took advantage of a drunk companion's unconsciousness to attack her sexually, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

State troopers on routine patrol on the Esplanade near Community Boating pulled Joseph Bartel, 49, off the still clothed woman around 1 a.m. on Sunday, the DA's office says.

The DA's office provided this account:

By adamg - 6/30/13 - 1:15 pm

Around 1 a.m., state troopers on patrol near the Longfellow Bridge arrested Joseph Barthel, 49, of Waltham, after they spotted him attacking a 21-year-old woman, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

"Based on the evidence developed thus far, this incident does not appear to be linked to the well-publicized series of unsolved sexual assaults on the Esplanade" and at Moakley Park in South Boston, the DA's office says, adding, however, they will compare his description to those of attackers in other unsolved attacks in the area.

Read a report on his 1990 visit, which included a rally on the Esplanade:

Mandela admirers arrived on foot and by car, bus, train, bike, boat and even inner tube. Families spread out blankets and set up lawn chairs on the grass for picnics, while giant screens brought the speech closer. Hawkers sold T-shirts bearing such slogans as "Boston Welcomes Mandela" and "Sanctions Until Democracy."

Well, maybe one surprise: The Mass. Ave. bridge will be shut at 4 p.m. so that some sort of fireworks-related display can be done from it, state officials announced today.

State Police said fireworks attendees can expect bag checks, prohibitions on many items and far greater police and camera surveillance of the Pops concert and fireworks.

The Globe reports the good news.

Oh, yeah, the Globe also reports this is all because of evil New Yorkers trying to squash our poor little fireworks display, but, hey, even evil New Yorkers aren't all bad.

The Daily Free Press reports BU campus police don't have tasers and that what some people thought was a taser was, in fact, a flashlight the cop was using to signal a fellow officer during an Esplanade snowball fight at the height of the storm. Police say the student was captured and released after throwing a snowball in the cop's face.

By adamg - 2/9/13 - 9:42 am

What do several hundred BU students do? Descend on Storrow Drive and the Esplanade. Police, of course, arrived not long after to break things up.

More video (snowball fight starts about 1:00).
