Back Bay

The Herald reports on the battle between the BPL board of trustees, who think it's dandy to decorate the main library with Christmas wreathes, and a Back Bay resident who wants to supplement the wreathes with a menorah.

The mayor, who appoints library trustees, has decided it's "not his place" to try to convince them otherwise.

Good thing Boston has more than one paramedic unit: Boston EMS Incidents reports that when a report of a person suffering a heart attack in the Prudential Center food court came in around 10:30 p.m., the Paramedic 1 unit stationed on Purchase Street was dispatched to the scene - but couldn't even get out of its bay due to the large traffic jam caused by protesters in Dewey Square and police blocking traffic to keep motorists from plowing into the protesters.

Dispatchers then routed Paramedic 2, based on Warren Street in Roxbury, to the mall, where firefighters and EMTs were treating the unconscious but still breathing person until the paramedics could arrive.

State Police report 51 people were arrested at three locations during last night's wending Ferguson protest march, which made its way from one highway ramp to another in what turned out to be vain attempts to block a highway.

Some 33 people were arrested on or near the Mass. Ave. Connector, where protesters first tried to walk onto I-93 south; 17 in Dewey Square; and 1 person on a ramp down to the O'Neill Tunnel at Purchase Street, State Police say.

A Ferguson protest in Dudley Square turned into a march of people that kept getting thwarted by Boston and State Police to shut one of the highways running through Boston.

The action started at the Southeast Expressway southbound at the Mass. Ave. connector, where protesters were mostly blocked - although they shut down the connector, police kept them off the Expressway.

Matt Soleyn reports that around 8:50 a.m., a bus from Fairfield University was about a half-mile before the Fenway exit inbound:

Trying to backup on Storrow Drive East in rush hour. At least it didn't hit an overpass.

At 8:29 a.m., the MBTA tweeted:

#GreenLine: All branches: Moderate eastbound delays due to power issue.

In response to somebody's query about what exactly "moderate" means when he's been sitting on a trolley that hasn't moved in ten minutes, the T added:

Yes, we describe a "moderate" delay as a major disruption in service.

At 8:54, Andrea reported:

This is a little after the fact, but I haven't seen it on UHub or anywhere else: Amtrak has closed its ticket office at Back Bay station.

Michael Ford, 66, of Cambridge could get five years in federal prison when sentenced on an identity-theft charge related to the 2008 theft and sale of a 17th-century diary from Old South Church.

In a guilty plea on Monday, Ford acknowledged that he used somebody else's driver's license to cash a $750 check from a Harvard Square bookstore for James Hull's diary, the US Attorney's office in Boston reports.

Prudential in the fog in Boston

Earlier, we saw the Hancock above the fog. Tomo forwards this photo by co-worker Heidi Sullivan of the reverse view: The Pru as seen from the 47th floor of the Hancock tower.

Green Line service turned into a complete oxymoron this morning when a trolley died. The T rolled in substitute buses between Kenmore and Park. At 11 a.m., Zach Tucker tweeted:

3 dark trolleys sitting at Copley IB, no MBTA CSA's anywhere to explain to clueless tourists.

UPDATE: At 1 p.m., the T announced resumption of normal service, but, naturally, with residual delays.

A DCR worker discovered a man's body in the Muddy River in the area of the Bowker overpass around 10 a.m. today, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

A tentative identification has been made based on a missing-person's report, the DA's office says, adding foul play does not appear to have been involved.

It's the same general location where bodies were found in June and March.

Madrileños por el mundo: Boston

A one-hour tour of Boston by and for people who live in Madrid. It's all in Spanish, but even if you don't speak it, you can look at the pictures. My favorite part was when the local host, a native Spaniard now in Boston, and the interviewer jaywalk across Dartmouth from the park to the library and the interviewer expresses some fear and the host says something like "Nah, by law, Massholes have to stop for pedestrians" (or at least it seemed like that, my Spanish is a bit rusty). Also, apparently the Spanish word for "gay" is "gay."

Shortly after 4 p.m., Boston and Cambridge firefighters and Boston and State police began rushing to the Mass. Ave. Bridge on a report of a sailboat tipping over in the wind and dumping somebody in the water. Just as firefighters were about to begin their "tech rescue," however, the person managed to get back in the boat and make his way to shore on the Cambridge side - where he was met by troopers and Cambridge firefighters. He declined medical attention.

Green Line refugees on the Orange Line at Back Bay

Back Bay: Orange Line now reporting delays due to all the Green Line refugees. Photo by Alexander Zafris.

One of those dreaded "track issues" means no service at all between Arlington and Haymarket. Use the Orange Line, the T advises, and pray it doesn't die, too.

Jason Greeley reported at 8:20:

Broken rail at Boylston, no shuttle, stuck for half an hour in a tunnel.

UPDATE, 8:49 a.m.: And now the entire E line is dead and the T is advising that "Orange Line experiencing moderate delays due to heavy ridership as a result of the Green Line track issue."

The Boston Licensing Board decides Thursday whether to grant a license to a proposed outlet of a French Italian-style gelato chain on Newbury Street.

Amorino, 249 Newbury St., off Fairfield, would be the company's third eatery in the US - and its first in Boston. According to its philosophy, Amorino uses only the eggs of free-range chickens and "the highest-grade whole milk" in its hand-churned

Manager Lea Sasportes said that in addition to gelato, Amorino will sell other sweets and coffee.
