Four of the five candidates running to take Mike Ross's place on the City Council said tonight it's way past time for the city to give District 8 more elementary schools.

The fifth candidate, Angelica Addivinola might have agreed as well, but she didn't attend a forum sponsored by the Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay at the Copley Square library. The field will be winnowed down to two in the Sept. 24 preliminary.

Davis outside the hospital.

A Middlesex County prisoner about to get medical treatment at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary managed to grab a deputy sheriff's gun and shoot him. A second deputy then shot the prisoner in the chest, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said today.

According to Davis, the prisoner, from a Middlesex County correctional facility, arrived at the Mass. Eye and Ear emergency room shortly before noon, with two armed deputies, for treatment of an unspecified condition.

DNA test results show Albert DeSalvo "was the source of seminal fluid" found at the murder scene of Mary Sullivan in 1964, law-enforcement officials announced today.

Specifically, DNA specialists calculated the odds that a white male other than DeSalvo contributed the crime scene evidence at one in 220 billion. At the time Sullivan was killed, only about 3.2 billion human beings were alive on the planet, and only about 107 billion human beings have ever lived on the planet.

The state begins Longfellow Bridge detours this weekend as it begins to rip the bridge apart and put it back together better than ever.

Starting Saturday, only people driving from Cambridge to Boston will be allowed on the bridge. The Cambridge bound will instead be diverted via Storrow Drive up to Charles River Dam Road and then across that thoughtfully already re-built span into Cambridge.

WBZ reports on some guy's arrest outside Kerry's Louisburg Square manse yesterday.

Even in this day and age, of course, taking photos in public is not necessarily enough for an arrest, no matter how angsty it might make a State Department security guy inside the Secretary of State's house. That car in a no-parking zone with an open container of alcohol, in Massachusetts, however? You are so booked. That pellet gun police say they found didn't help, either.

The Globe ran your basic second-day reaction story today to the news that another woman was indecently assaulted on Beacon Hill. About what you'd expect, except for this quote from a chipper public-relations major at Suffolk - who lives on Beacon Hill:

Honestly, I feel like the people getting attacked aren't being aware. And they're probably overreacting in their [police] reports.

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports that Aaron Michlewitz, who represents the increasingly student filled North End and Beacon Hill, says the BRA needs to consider requiring dorms in the proposed garage re-do.

Perhaps Rep. Michlewitz is too young to remember when Beacon Hill residents managed to squash Suffolk's plans to turn the old MDC building across from the State House into a dormitory.

Modern DNA techniques and dogged work by a detective who followed around a member of Albert DeSalvo's family last year have resulted in evidence that pretty conclusively ties DeSalvo to the last of the Boston Strangler murders in 1964, police and prosecutors announced today.

Still, just to be absolutely sure, prosecutors yesterday obtained a court order to exhume DeSalvo's body from a Peabody cemetery to optain samples with which to compare samples taken from the body and blanket of 19-year-old Mary Sullivan after her rape and murder in her Charles Street apartment, Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said at a packed press conference this morning.
