Boston parks are stages for our lives. We watch, we walk, we sit, we run. We swing, we slide, and sometimes hang upside down. We play, we compete, we win and loose. We commune. We perform. We celebrate.

And sometimes we do things that delight others, intended or not, like snowkiting in Franklin Park. Click here for photos.

Growing a Parks Network - Its a Beautiful Thing

Twenty organizations, including several that represent coalitions of organizations, got together last week on December 3, 2009 for a Strategy Meeting. We discussed how we can work together to improve our parks in Boston, including both those in the city park system and the state park system, that together, are OUR PARK SYSTEM. A number of good ideas came out around the at-large city council debate on parks and open spaces that we organized in October, and at the meeting we added to them. Then we refined the list, voted on priorities, and discussed the first several in greater detail. We also discussed the looming budget crisis at the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Do you care about basic services in your DCR parks in Boston? Go to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs' FY 2011’s budget hearing with Secretary Ian Bowles on Monday, November 23, 2009, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at 100 Cambridge Street, 2nd floor, Conference Room B. Submit written comments prior to the hearing, or up until November 30, 2009. Bring a picture I.D. for security.

State EEA to hold listening sessions that will impact state parks

On November 10, 2009 the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs issued a press release stating it is seeking ideas for Re-Organization, Public Private Partnerships and Regulatory Models. The Department of Conservation and Recreation is in EEA.

Overall, the at-large city council candidates showed us they understand a range of issues. The laugh of the night came with the audience question, "What does the Asian Long Horned Beetle mean to you? ?Stumped, Felix Arroyo answered, "Well if it has horns, it must not be good."
