Do you often get stuck in conversations? Not know how to approach people at networking events? Join Socializing for Justice for a fast-paced, fun & interactive Skillshare on the Art of the Schmooze on May 14, 6:00 - 8:30 PM at the NonProfit Center*, 89 South St, Boston.

SoJust hosts events that draw progressives of all stripes that share common values but may work on different issues. We create social spaces that allow for the possibility of cross-issue connections and run a Skillshare Series, hosted by The NonProfit Center, which builds our individual capacity to make a difference in the world.

In a recent 60 Minutes expose, Aerosmith: Livin' on the Edge, Lara Logan coaxed out some harsh criticism of Steven Tyler from his band mates Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford and Joey Kramer. She then used the criticism to question Steven Tyler who was taken aback and at first a bit defense, then he returned the favor.

I suspect Aerosmith looked at the 60 Minutes interview as an opportunity for high profile public relations, but as it turned out the segment didn't put the band in a good light. Now, Tom Hamilton has an explanation which you have to read but first make sure there are no distractions.

Justin Locke spent 18 years playing bass with the Boston Pops (as well
as playing in the Boston Opera, and Ballet orchestras). He worked
with such conductors as Arthur Fiedler, Henry Mancini, John Willams,
and Leonard Bernstein. Justin is now an author and speaker. In his
presentation (taken from his book “Real Men Don’t Rehearse”), he will
share a first hand (and generally hysterical) look at what it’s really
like to be a professional musician. Stories will include cannon
mishaps on the Esplanade, kiddie concerts gone horribly wrong, and of
course a story or two about Arthur Fielder!

Justin was recently featured as an "author@google" and in the Boston Globe, and he has also
appeared on CBS Radio, Greater Boston, and Chronicle HD. This is a

QPR: Suicide Prevention Training for Community Leaders

Oftentimes, community leaders* are sought out for support in times of crisis and are the first to become aware that someone is considering killing themselves. Attend this training to gain the skills to handle the "suicide question" and become knowledgeable about local resources for you and your community.

Due to limited seating, this 2-hour training is being offered on Monday, March 19 and Tuesday, May 8 - select your preferred date when registering.

QPR - Question, Persuade, Refer is modeled after the success of the CPR medical intervention and is based on the following concepts:

Those who most need help in a suicidal crisis are the least likely to ask for it.
Prior to making a suicide attempt, a person typically sends warning signs.
Asking "Are you thinking about killing yourself?" is a key step to preventing suicide.

This training will address:

The anxiety we feel when we are talking to someone who is suicidal.
How to specifically ask "the question".
How to persuade someone to seek help.
How to make sure they get the referral they need.

*For the purpose of this training, a community leader is anyone who regularly convenes groups of people.

In the last 3 days in Boston, 10 people have been shot and 2 have died from gun shot wounds. In all likelihood, all of these crimes were committed with illegal guns.

www.MayorsAgainstIllegalGuns.org has proposed Federal legislation that would help get illegal guns off the streets. Ask your Congressman, Senators and neighbors if they support it.

The NRA is one of the most powerful lobbies in the USA so we have a lot of work to do to get this passed. Scott Brown says he opposes Federal legislation on this issue because "it is a local issue." Mayors Tom Menino and Mike Bloomberg and mayors from 625 cities in the USA disagree with Scott Brown.

The photographer, Paul Weiskel, captured other pictures of [Officer Vaden] Scantlebury looking angrily at the camera. In one photo, Scantlebury's hand is directly in front of the lens.

Weiskel, a photojournalist .. said he believed Scantlebury was trying to take his camera.
