Mystery fireworks over Boston Harbor

Cheyenne was among the many people who watched the fireworks over Boston Harbor tonight - and who wondered what the reason was. Joe Phalen reports they were set off from a barge off 50 Liberty in the Seaport. Spencer Buell reports he called Boston and State Police and the city (don't worry - he's a reporter; knows not to call 911) and that nobody had an answer.

UPDATE: BFD spokesman Steve MacDonald reports the privately financed show was put on by Atlas Pyro of Jaffrey, NH for an events-production company called Fresh Wata in Las Vegas, NV.

No identification of the body recovered this morning, let alone possible cause of death yet, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. The body was first spotted by the crew of a commercial fishing vessel, who radioed the Coast Guard. State Environmental Police and the Boston Police harbor unit recovered the body.

The body, is believed to be that of an adult but was in a state of decomposition such that age, gender, and ethnicity are not immediately apparent.

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports the state Department of Environmental Protection has ruled a proposed 277-room hotel at Lewis Wharf can't be built over most of the pilings that extend past the pier, which would drastically limit the project's size.

rotting pier in East Boston

A concerned citizen files a 311 report about a collapsing pier in East Boston across from the Navy Yard:

Wooden pier has deteriorated significantly over last 3 weeks and is emitting debris into the harbor at high tide. It needs removal to avoid further water contamination.

CommonWealth reviews the progress Boston has made to replace the bridge to the one-time substance-abuse and homeless programs on the island, finds there is none; the bridge is no longer even on a city list of upcoming capital projects.

Mayor Walsh vowed to replace the bridge after it was shut in October, 2014, after decades of neglect.

Around 8:30 p.m. on the northern side of Lovells Island. The Coast Guard, the BPD harbor unit and the State Police marine unit all responded. Boston Police ferried the two people on board back to terra firma.

The Globe writes today that since 2009, at least 11 bodies have been recovered from the water surrounding Boston and that the last one was that of Zachary Marr, whose body was found in the Charles near North Station a month after he disappeared from a downtown bar.
