Messed up Green Line trolley

Harry Wong noticed today that somebody spent a fair amount of time decorating a Green Line trolley at the Cleveland Circle yard with a large representation of a classic English word.

Alas for Tagger Dude, that's an un-rebuilt old trolley, so it's not going anywhere, except to get fixed and repaired (the Globe reports it's not one of the trolleys heading to upstate New York for a major overhaul). Also, when it comes to taggers, T cops go into Mountie mode.

The City of Boston Public Works Department last night presented new plans for the reconstruction of Commonwealth Avenue between Brighton Avenue (Packards Corner) and Warren/Kelton Streets.

To create space for wider sidewalks and dedicated space for people biking, it was proposed that left-side angled parking be removed from the carriage road and any remaining angled parking be reconfigured to parallel parking along the curb. Read more.

A citizen who recently resumed smoking after 17 years complains that workers at a Cleveland Circle condo complex keep removing the hand-made ash trays he keeps putting out by a bench near Cassidy Playground so he can "have my coffee and cigarettes and watch the geese" and comply with the complex's rule against smoking inside.

Alleged fake bomb used in Brighton bank holdup

It's amazing what you can do with some tubes and wires, red cellophane, a knob and a battery.

A federal grand jury this week indicted Kenneth Denny, 60, for allegedly holding up a Brighton Center bank with a phony bomb.

Although the faux-bombe was enough to convince a teller to hand Denny some $4,000 in cash, he never got a chance to spend any of it, according to an affidavit by an FBI agent: As he completed his transaction, Denny allegedly left his wallet, containing a photo ID, on the counter, and a Boston cop who'd spotted him nearby on the way into the bank recognized his photo and he was quickly swarmed and arrested.

The affidavit describes the government's version of what happened: Read more.

The Globe reports Secretary of State and Brighton resident Bill Galvin has managed to block construction of an apartment complex for veterans because it would mean demolishing some old buildings that neither the Boston Landmarks Commission nor the Brighton-Allston Historical Society say are important enough to save - especially since there are numerous clones of the buildings across the Northeast.

UPDATE: Tree removed, service resumed.

The T is shutting the Green Line between Fenway and Reservoir at 11 a.m. so workers can remove a large tree that is now leaning dangerously close to the overhead wires near Reservoir. Expect a two-hour shutdown.

Because substitute bus service will be limited, customers are strongly encouraged to use the closest stations along the Green Line’s C branch (Beacon Street).

Bus service will be available for persons with disabilities at Reservoir and Kenmore Stations.
