Yes, Virginia, there is such a thing as a free lunch. After local VCs got annoyed at some allegedly scam-worthy outsiders charging high prices for access to VC types, they got together to create UnPitch Boston, coming up on 11-Dec, where hopeful young entrepreneurs can get a free lunch with a VC.

And the building best known for the Au Bon Pain and the outside chess tables will get an extensive, if unspecified, remake.

Fisher cat, stuffed and mounted

Look at those teeth, those claws, those beady little eyes!

Near Fresh Pond, Wicked Local Cambridge alerts us. But don't worry:

There have been no reports of fisher cats attacking a person or domestic animal in Cambridge.

Ed. note: This is not the Fresh Pond fisher cat. This is the fisher cat Kevin Cosby hit with his car, then had stuffed and mounted.

Cambridge Police report the man who's been sticking up convenience stores in the Boston area over the past few months, struck again around 9 p.m. on Monday at a Cambridge Street convenience store.

According to police, the man, about 5'11" and 30-35, went up to the counter, lifted the bottom of his hoodie to show off his gun and demanded money from the register. Police say the clerk told him he couldn't open the register unless somebody made a purchase:

At 7:28 a.m., Mike Connor tweeted:

It's officially snowing in Boston. Snow is blowing into the red line car "standing by for a moment" at MGH.

A train died on the Red Line this morning, of course, this time at Alewife. Also, the T reports issues on the Red Line and some commuter lines with slippery rail, caused not by the snow but by the pulpy, soaky remains of millions of dead leaves that just don't stop falling on the tracks.

Updated

At least two trains died on the Red Line this morning, one around 6:30 a.m. at Porter and another a little more than an hour later just outside Alewife.

It was the latter death that bollixed up the morning commute. At 8:19 a.m., Jessica tweeted:

Commuters have been waiting at N Quincy since 7:35am. When will there be room on the #mbta to get on? #freezing & it's not even snowing yet.

Around 6:40 a.m., Orange Line riders heading into town from the north got to join in on the fun when one of their trains died.

Cambridge Day reports on the downstairs neighbor of Upstairs on the Square in Harvard Square, which is moving out.

The deceased train is at Harvard; platforms at other stations are filling rapidly.

Green Line trolleys, meanwhile, died at Coolidge Corner and near Copley Square.

Cambridge Day sounds the alarm.

"We have unleashed the fury," City Councilor Ken Reeves warns, in a story illustrated, of course, with a photo showing "the size of a dead Cambridge rat compared with an adult man’s foot."

Mike the Mad Biologist, who, as a Back Bay resident, knows something about rats, was amazed by what he saw in Central Square last night::

Saw one last night ~8pm scampering around in the open by City Hall. Big one too. Definitely could beat up Back Bay ones.

UPDATE: Service came back on shortly after 4 p.m.

Matt Robbins reports:

Verizon data conduit damaged last night at 800 Boylston. Major outage for downtown Boston

800 Boylston is the Prudential Center. One frustrated network administrator says the outage is going on 15+ hours:

Affecting hundreds of companies in Boston and Cambridge. Worst outage I've seen in 7 years of working in Kendall.

Says another:

Good thing I still have 10,000 hours on AOL!

The T will be running buses instead of trains over the Longfellow this weekend as workers get the tracks ready for the extensive repairs planned for the bridge. Also:

Bicyclists will be asked to walk their bikes on the sidewalk across the Longfellow Bridge to ensure the safety of all bridge users. On Saturday, October 26, there will be alternating single lane closures on Memorial Drive eastbound to accommodate work above the roadway. Pedestrian travel will also be temporarily detoured from the eastbound side of Memorial Drive to the westbound side that day.

Also, a little birdie whispers:

I know the Garment District is a little concerned about people getting tripped up getting to their store. Everyone can still get there on the T. They just have to take a bus to do it.
