City Council

UPDATE: Herald says it's changed the time of its forum to "accommodate a scheduling conflict by some candidates," which is certainly an artful way to put it.

Marty Walsh, John Barros and Bill Walczak say that on the evening of Sept. 9, they'll be honoring their commitments and appearing at a mayoral forum sponsored by MassCreative, which was announced weeks ago, rather than the forum announced just yesterday by the Herald, Suffolk University and NECN.

Walsh, who has a top advisor who's pretty well known in local arts and entertainment circles, tweeted:

The City Council on Wednesday considers an ordinance that would ban children under 16 from any cage-fighting matches that make their way to Boston - unless the kids are accompanied by a parent.

City Council President Steve Murphy had originally proposed an ordinance that would bar everybody under 18 from the matches, with no exceptions. Murphy cites not just spurting blood and violence but the neo-Nazi, homophobic and pro-rape messages he says the fighters often tattoo on their arms or use as banter.

The council's meeting begins at noon in its fifth-floor chambers in City Hall.

Mike Ross is leaving his car in the Boston Globe parking lot this morning so he can spend a couple days getting from one campaign stop to another by the T and his own feet (why the Globe? Why not? Plus, it's sort of near the JFK/UMass T stop, although the Dorchester Reporter lot is a lot closer).

David Bernstein interviews Thomas Dooley, running for the district seat Mike Ross is giving up:

I know all the city councilors, moreso the ones that were there a few years ago. They’re all cowards. They’ve allowed Mayor Menino to terrorize them for 20 years. They never stand up to him. They’re all concerned about keeping their jobs. I’m in a position, as a city councilor representing the most affluent part of Boston, I will say what needs to be said to the mayor of Boston.

Bonus for a certain UHub regular: He's the only candidate to publicly call for the deciphering of City Council stenographic records.

It's nothing but net for Rob Consalvo in his first TV ad:

Ramon SotoAt a candidates' forum in West Roxbury tonight, pretty much all the candidates for mayor and city council named public safety as one of their top priorities.

Up until now, the candidates have mostly contented themselves with playing up their own platforms on issues. Casinos, however, change everything.

Mike Ross blasted Dan Conley for calling for a citywide referendum on the Suffolk Downs proposal and threatening to sue to stop an Everett casino if Suffolk Downs goes down in flames:

City Councilor Tito Jackson (Roxbury) is organizing a series of "Enough is Enough" walks this summer, with the first starting at 7 p.m. on Friday from the corner of Walnut Avenue and Fenno Street, near where a man was shot in a drive-by on June 28.

David Bernstein talks to Michael Nichols, one of the numerous candidates running to replace Mike Ross as district 8 councilor in the fall elections.

City Councilor Charles Yancey said today that while his name will be on the September ballot in Dorchester twice - once for city council, once for mayor - he will be spending all his time between now and then running for mayor.

Following an education forum at the BPL in Copley Square, Yancey said he is running a citywide campaign for mayor and that he will not actively campaign for the District 4 seat he has held since 1984. He said he's just doing the same thing a number of other candidates across the country have long done when they seek higher office.

A detailed Craigslist posting from one of our gazillion city-council candidates seeks volunteers for a variety of campaign positions without saying who the candidate is or what positions he or she has on any issues. Well, except for fun. The candidate is big on fun:

The Jamaica Plain Gazette interviews Luis Valerio of West Roxbury, who is running against incumbent Councilor Matt O'Malley (West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain) not out of any animus toward O'Malley but because he couldn't get his kids into any of the public schools in West Roxbury. In addition to renting out English to local universities, he would build an indoor sports center at Millennium Park.

The City Council on Wednesday considers a request by Councilor and mayoral candidate Mike Ross for a hearing to grill NStar officials about the Sunday blackout, which he said came "despite assurances of safety upgrades and additional installation of materials to prevent future outages" following last year's transformer explosion and outage.

Ross represents the Back Bay and Fenway, which have been particularly hard hit by the blackouts.

WBUR reports on progressives fretting about the City Council winding up next year just as white and XYish as "old Boston." Or as 'BUR calls these folks, "self-styled progressives," because God forbid people be allowed to identify their political leanings without a reporter casting some doubt on what they really are by adding some empty phrase like "self-styled." But I guess we could expect no less from self-professed reporter David Scharfenberg.

By a 9-4 vote, the City Council today approved an ordinance that requires owners of commercial buildings larger than 35,000 square feet and residential buildings with more than 35 units to file annual reports with the city on their resource consumption - along with their annual emissions of greenhouse gases.

The goal of the new law is to help curb greenhouse emissions and just make Boston a more resource-efficient kind of place.

Shaun Ivers of Jamaica Plain plans to formally launch his campaign today in Geneva/Bowdoin, but first he took a few potshots against rivals Michael Flaherty, Steve Murphy, Ayanna Pressley and Michelle Wu.

Shaun Ivers, a Jamaica Plain real-estate agent and consultant, said today he's running for one of the four at-large city-council seats this fall, vowing not to become another mayoral kowtower engaging in "meaningless soapbox grandstanding:"
